Will Leiker has earned new credentials that give him the expertise to support Office Products Inc. (OPI) customers with all their computer and networking needs.

Leiker, Information Technology (IT) specialist, recently completed the Comptia A Plus certification that included hands-on learning and two exams – one in Salina, the other in Wichita. As a result, he is now a certified IT technician.

“This foundational certification covered the entire field of Information Technology,” Leiker said. “I received comprehensive training in hardware, software, operating systems, security, mobile devices and networking.

“Because of this, I’m equipped to diagnose and resolve a wide range of technical issues, from system performance and software errors to hardware failures and network connectivity. I can also assist with securing devices and supporting users across various IT environments.”

Leiker noted that he is grateful to OPI’s owners for giving him this opportunity to enhance his IT knowledge.

“OPI supported me in every way through this whole process,” the technician said. “They supplied study materials and offered an environment that is conducive to learning. This included hands-on training here at OPI.”

Leiker handles a wide range of IT responsibilities at OPI in Great Bend, often using remote support tools, but he also provides on-site assistance when the situation calls for it.

“Our IT support is available for businesses of any size - from individual clients to large organizations,” Leiker said. “We also work with city and county governments, providing reliable technology services tailored to their needs.”

Leiker has been at OPI for three years and earned an associate’s degree at Barton Community College. He is currently working on his bachelor’s in IT at Western Governors University.

Willie Spires, OPI service manager, noted that Leiker’s new certification and his current university coursework “demonstrate that he is willing to pursue his education so that he can better serve our customers. Will is an exceptional employee and I foresee a successful future ahead for him.”

Spires also noted that OPI “always provides advanced training for our technicians to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest technology.”

OPI is located at 1204 Main in Great Bend; 516 Broadway in Larned; 724 N. Main in Russell; and 2001 Vine in Hays.

Great Bend's Leiker earns certification as IT technician at OPI

Starting at age 30, our bodies naturally start to lose muscle mass. We lose about 3–5% every 10 years. You might not notice the effects at first. But over time, the reduced muscle mass leads to decreased strength. After a while, it can lead to a condition called sarcopenia.

With aging, you start losing muscle mass, muscle strength, and have some limitations with your activities.

Some muscle loss is expected with the natural aging process. But too much muscle loss can lead to mobility difficulties. Sarcopenia can make it harder to stand up from a chair, walk, open a jar, or carry groceries. It can also increase your risk of falling.

Certain factors may make muscle loss worse as you age. These include some chronic illnesses, a lack of exercise, and an unhealthy diet. Hormonal changes that occur during menopause can also contribute.

Researchers estimate that 10–20% of older adults have sarcopenia. But testing people for sarcopenia can be tricky. That’s because there isn’t a widely agreed-upon method to measure muscle loss. It’s also not clear exactly how much muscle someone can lose before it leads to disability or injury. So an NIH-funded team of experts recently set out to better define sarcopenia and its impact on people’s health.

The team analyzed data from several studies that looked at thousands of people aged 65 and older. They focused on three different measures of muscle health: grip strength, walking speed, and lean body mass. Those with weaker grip strength and slower walking speed (less than 2.6 feet per second) showed higher risk of falls, mobility limitations, hip fractures, and death. But lean body mass was not linked with these outcomes. As a result, the researchers recommended using grip strength and walking speed to help assess sarcopenia.

As muscle loss worsens, so can sarcopenia’s effects. Because sarcopenia increases your risk of falling, those who have it are nearly twice as likely to be hospitalized as those without it. Sarcopenia increases the risk of broken bones and the loss of independence with age. It can also make it more difficult for your body to fight certain diseases, like cancer.

You can take steps to prevent too much muscle loss and weakness as you age. Getting enough physical activity is key. In particular, you need to have resistance training because this is going to help build your strength. Resistance training can include activities like push-ups, squats, or lifting weights.

A healthy diet can also help prevent or manage sarcopenia. Your body needs protein to build and maintain muscle. Eating a diet rich in protein can keep your muscles healthy as you age. Experts suggest eating at least 1.2 grams of protein for every two pounds of body weight to treat or manage sarcopenia.

While more research is needed, some dietary supplements have shown promise for preventing muscle loss when combined with diet and exercise. These include amino acids, fish oil, vitamin D, selenium, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.

If you think you might have sarcopenia, talk with your doctor. They can help you make a plan to prevent further muscle loss and preserve your health and independence.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (4/30)

In late March, the Barton County Commission approved moving their
asphalt preparation to Venture Corporation. In the past, Venture would have to
break down their plant in order to bring the cold mix to the county’s pit.
Looking for a more cost-effective method, Venture now mixes the asphalt and
keeps the material at their plant. 

Venture CEO Kip Spray informed the
commissioners Tuesday that they are welcome to view the operation.


"I just wanted commissioners to know that we started mixing the cold mix for the county today," said Spray. "If any of you would like to meet me out there, I'd more than happy to show you the facility, where we're putting your cold mix and the operations out there."

All five commissioners visited the Venture asphalt plant Tuesday morning as the
company mixed the asphalt for the 2025 road maintenance program.
The county will receive 25,000 tons of asphalt from Venture at a cost of $32
per ton. 

There are 389 miles of paved roads in Barton County, ranking near the
top among Kansas counties. A quarter of county’s paved roads are overlaid each
year. The southwest quadrant is the focus for repairs in 2025.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

students do really well in school so they “needed a little extra something to get
us through the year.” That little something has turned into a weekly publishing
every Friday for Maverick and his classmates.


"We get done Thursday, so on Friday morning we go through the process of printing and passing them out to every classroom in the school," said Wilson. "We work on it every morning before school, sometimes during recess and even after school if we're really behind."

5th grader Brock Bauer, along with Cody Lanterman, also presented to the USD 428
Board of Education Wednesday during the board’s luncheon at the school and said
the Jet Gazette includes recaps on sports, a joke of the week and book of the
week.


"We wanted to fill in kids who don't watch NBA, MLB and other sports content," said Bauer. "We thought we should make something so they can understand what's happening. It just kept getting bigger and expanded from there."

Along with organizing a coloring contest, the newspaper students highlight school
events such as scholar’s bowl.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton Community College’s Director of the Medical Laboratory Technician Program Karen Gunther led a phlebotomy workshop for Kansas Health Science instructors last week on the Barton campus.

Gunther said the event provided essential training to Kansas high school health science instructors interested in incorporating phlebotomy into their classrooms and HOSA chapter activities.

“There are teachers across Kansas who want to implement phlebotomy into their HOSA chapters and health science courses, and it is a great way to learn anatomy, blood structure, and job skills,” she said. “It is, however, a skill that needs to be taught correctly and one that is not offered to teachers through education courses. One of the only ways for high school teachers and others to get the training needed to correctly perform the skill and teach it, along with obtaining the background theory needed, would be a workshop such as this or to participate in a medical professions program.”

Gunther said phlebotomy can open doors to many opportunities for students throughout the medical world.

“Phlebotomy is a course that can lead high school students to a workforce certification and completion of a CTE Health Science Pathway before graduation,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp; “It is a high-demand position for medical professionals and is a skill that is used in many healthcare careers such as nursing, medical laboratory science, emergency medical services, medical assisting, and more.”

Allowing students to test the waters of the medical world is a crucial step for students to see if they’re interested in going further. Gunther said phlebotomy is a great jump-off point because it is a job that focuses not only on technical skills but requires an introduction to many relevant theories and soft skills that are beneficial for success as a medical professional beyond technical skills.

“A phlebotomist is also a professional involved in almost every area of the hospital, and phlebotomists communicate and interact with patients, as well as many different professionals in the healthcare setting,” she said. “So, the potential of phlebotomy as a career exploration tool is tremendous, and it gives the student a skill set they can use in many ways.”

Cool Careers is back this May with new episodes on Smoky Hills PBS

It’s late April and the wheat crop is barreling into the flag leaf growth stages in many parts of the state. The rainy weather over the last week has growers wondering what the stripe rust outlook is now going forward. Some producers are likely considering the need for a flag leaf fungicide application. The good news is that, even though we’ve received some moisture, the risk for stripe rust in the state remains low, says Kelsey-Anderson Onofre, K-State Extension Plant Pathologist. Scouting efforts should continue over the next two weeks. In this article, Kelsey will walk through some of the reasons for the current low stripe rust risk and other diseases to be thinking about in wheat right now.

The risk of stripe rust in Kansas remains low for 2025 - on March 27, K-State reported that it was shaping up to be a low stripe rust year in Kansas. That trend still appears to be holding true. Stripe rust has been active at low levels in Texas since February, but conditions have not been favorable for disease development. This is important because stripe rust does not survive the winter in Kansas and needs to work its way up from the south annually. Low disease pressure in Texas means fewer spores are available to make their way north to Kansas. Additionally, at the time of this report, only trace levels of stripe rust were reported in Oklahoma. The first stripe rust detection in Kansas was recently reported on April 28 in Ford County. For reference, in years when stripe rust is an issue, it is generally detected in Kansas before April 15. With all of this in mind, we believe it will be difficult for stripe rust to establish and “catch up” at this point in the season, says Kelsey. Because of this, the risk of stripe rust remains low in the state. As a reminder, the probability of a positive return on a fungicide application greatly diminishes when disease pressure is absent. That said, producers should continue to scout and report any occurrences through the remainder of the season. These next two weeks will be critical for much of the state.

Should growers be worried about leaf rust? Reports from Texas indicate that leaf rust is active. As a reminder, leaf rust is a disease that typically shows up late in the season in Kansas (heading to flowering) due to its preference for slightly warmer temperatures. It is possible for leaf rust to occasionally survive the winter in Kansas. Watching for leaf rust development over the next few weeks will be important. Now is also a good time to check your variety resistance level to this disease, google “KS. Wheat Variety Guide 2024”.

Let’s turn our attention to the scab risk over the coming weeks - wheat fields planted into corn residue are at the highest risk. Wet weather over the next couple of weeks will be critical for determining scab risk in the state. As a reminder, scab infection occurs at flowering, but symptoms are often not visible for 14-21 days after infection. Because of this, you cannot scout for scab the way you would stripe rust or other foliar diseases. Fungicide decisions need to be made according to weather-based risk and the field’s yield potential. However, if wheat was not planted into corn residue, your risk of scab is low.

Fungicides are most effective against scab when applied at early flowering (Feekes 10.5.1), but can provide protection even when used later in the flowering window. It is very important to pay attention to pre-harvest intervals at this point of the season and follow guidelines provided on product labels.

Hailey Jump, Water and Wastewater Operator for Hoisington, Kansas, was presented with the 2025 Operator in Training – Emerging Excellence Award by Kansas Municipal Utilities (KMU). KMU is the statewide association of community-owned and operated electric, gas, water, and wastewater utilities in Kansas. Jump was presented the award at the 2025 KMU Conference in Wichita on April 24, 2025, by Katie Miller, KMU Director of Water Services.

Hailey Jump has been with the City since 2017, beginning her career as a certified EMT. In 2021, she transitioned to a full-time position in the Public Works department; subsequently, in 2022, she relocated from Public Works to the Water Department.

She joined the water plant crew with little experience in the area and has done an exceptional job growing herself and the water/wastewater team. She has earned her Level II water certification and her Level I wastewater certification, and is working toward her Level III water certification. Hailey quickly earned the respect of her peers and contractors in the community and continues to grow herself and her team, helping to increase Hoisington's number of certified water and wastewater operators.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cooper Rathbun’s earliest memories involve riding in the combine. Like many farm kids, he graduated from the buddy seat to driving the grain cart and eventually helping with equipment maintenance to make sure everything ran smoothly during one of the most critical times of the year. Now, as a high school senior, he plans to put that experience to work as he studies for a future career in agricultural engineering. His passion for farming, paired with his interests in technology and innovation, made him the ideal candidate for the 2025 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.

“Growing up on my family’s farm, I have spent countless hours working alongside my family during wheat harvest – riding in the combine, running grain carts and learning the importance of efficiency and sustainability in farming,” Rathbun wrote in his application. “These experiences have instilled in me a strong work ethic and an appreciation for innovation in agriculture.”

In addition to working on the family farm, Rathbun has been actively involved in leadership roles in school and his community, including as team captain of the basketball team. He has also secured a summer internship with Wilson &amp; Company, which will provide him with hands-on engineering experience.&nbsp;

Rathbun will graduate in May from Lincoln Junior-Senior High School and plans to attend Fort Hays State University to complete his pre-engineering classes before transferring to Kansas State University. Ultimately, he plans to pursue a career in agricultural engineering, focusing on developing technologies that improve efficiency, sustainability and productivity in farming.

“My goal is to develop practical, research-backed solutions that enhance wheat production while keeping costs manageable for farmers – just as Herb Clutter envisioned through his leadership in variety development and industrial uses of wheat,” he wrote. “The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship represents more than just financial assistance – it honors a legacy of leadership, innovation and commitment to Kansas wheat growers. I am eager to carry on that legacy by applying my education and experiences to the advancement of the wheat industry.”

Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.

The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family. Farm kids with a self-starter attitude and a curious mind like Rathbun are the perfect fit to honor Clutter’s legacy.&nbsp;

“Wheat harvest taught me more than just the mechanics of farming; it instilled in me a strong work ethic, patience and the ability to adapt under pressure,” he wrote. “Long hours in the field, unpredictable weather and the teamwork required to make everything come together showed me the dedication that farming demands.”

 </figure>Cooper Rathbun’s earliest memories involve riding in the combine. Like many farm kids, he graduated from the buddy seat to driving the grain cart and eventually helping with equipment maintenance to make sure everything ran smoothly during one of the most critical times of the year. Now, as a high school senior, he plans to put that experience to work as he studies for a future career in agricultural engineering. His passion for farming, paired with his interests in technology and innovation, made him the ideal candidate for the 2025 Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship, administered by the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers.“Growing up on my family’s farm, I have spent countless hours working alongside my family during wheat harvest – riding in the combine, running grain carts and learning the importance of efficiency and sustainability in farming,” Rathbun wrote in his application. “These experiences have instilled in me a strong work ethic and an appreciation for innovation in agriculture.”In addition to working on the family farm, Rathbun has been actively involved in leadership roles in school and his community, including as team captain of the basketball team. He has also secured a summer internship with Wilson &amp; Company, which will provide him with hands-on engineering experience.&nbsp;Rathbun will graduate in May from Lincoln Junior-Senior High School and plans to attend Fort Hays State University to complete his pre-engineering classes before transferring to Kansas State University. Ultimately, he plans to pursue a career in agricultural engineering, focusing on developing technologies that improve efficiency, sustainability and productivity in farming.“My goal is to develop practical, research-backed solutions that enhance wheat production while keeping costs manageable for farmers – just as Herb Clutter envisioned through his leadership in variety development and industrial uses of wheat,” he wrote. “The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship represents more than just financial assistance – it honors a legacy of leadership, innovation and commitment to Kansas wheat growers. I am eager to carry on that legacy by applying my education and experiences to the advancement of the wheat industry.”Herbert W. Clutter was a farmer from Holcomb and the first president of the National Association of Wheat Growers, which was established in 1948. Clutter encouraged Kansas wheat farmers to organize as a strong, unified voice, which led to the formation of the Kansas Association of Wheat Growers in 1952. He encouraged research in education and industrial uses of wheat, improved variety development and methods to produce the best product at the lowest cost. Clutter’s efforts led to the formation of the Kansas Wheat Commission by the Kansas legislature in 1957.The Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Herb Clutter’s influential role in organizing leadership groups on behalf of Kansas wheat producers and is supported by the generosity of the Herb Clutter family. Wheat Scoop: Rathbun awarded Herb Clutter Memorial Scholarship

From 2009 to 2021, Homer Kruckenberg served on the Barton County
Commission. Kruckenberg also spent six years on the USD 428 Board of
Education, two years in the United States Army and 44 years teaching at Great
Bend High School. 

Kruckenberg passed away April 13 at the age of
90.
Commissioner Barb Esfeld recalled how respected and loved Kruckenberg was in the
community.


"Before I decided to run for commission, I talked with Homer to make sure I had his support," said Esfeld. "He gladly supported me, and I do have a silver dollar and a $2 bill on my desk that I'll have forever. Even though he supported me, when I went around to get signatures before I could get my name on the ballot, I can't tell you how many people would not sign my sheet until they verified with Homer that he was agreeing with this."

Commissioner Donna Zimmerman said it was an honor getting to know Kruckenberg,
the historian.


"I was not lucky enough to have him as an instructor, but I felt fortunate to work with him as a commissioner when I was Barton County Clerk," said Zimmerman. "I always enjoyed my time with him. You didn't often know what he was going to say. He was always interesting. I do have a pile of coins that he shared. I remember him sharing them with football teams and those people that crossed his path that he wanted to inspire."

Along with the proclamation honoring the life of the former commissioner, the
Barton County Commission approved April 29, 2025 as Commissioner Homer

The government says total US petroleum exports set a record last year for the fifth year in a row, at 6.6 million barrels per day. EIA says that's fueled mainly by diesel and jet fuel exports. Mexico and Brazil were the top customers last year.

Last week, crude-oil exports retreated after a spike the week before. EIA reports 3.5 million barrels a day in US crude exports for the week through April 18th. That's a drop of 30 percent from the week before. Crude imports averaged just under 5.6 million barrels a day, down seven percent from a week earlier. The four week average is down nearly seven percent from a year ago.

The Energy Department took delivery on another half million barrels of crude at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.&nbsp; Strategic stockpiles are up nearly 32 million barrels or nine percent from a year ago. Commercial crude stockpiles increased slightly last week to rise over 443 million barrels as of April 18th. Stockpiles are about five percent below the five year average for this time of year.US crude production drops again to remain below 13.5 million barrels a day for a second week in a row, after topping that average in each of the prior six weeks. The four week average and cumulative year-to-date average each drop below 13.5 million.

So far this year, well-completions remains the sole metric in the Kansas oil patch that improves on what we reported last year. Kansas adds 23 well completions this week, notching 412 so far this year, compared to 378 a year ago.

Independent Oil and Gas Service asserts that, overall, drilling activity in Kansas is down 33 percent from last year, which marked the low point for crude production in the state. This week's Kansas Rig Count is down more than 12 percent from last week. It's up 23 percent from last month, but down 30 percent from last year. Regulators have okayed 230 new drilling permits so far this year, compared to 283 a year ago.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Wednesday's weather

On Saturday, April 26, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a bicyclist in the area of 3rd Street and Elm Street in Great Bend for a traffic violation. 

Upon initial contact, the subject, who was later identified as Kaden Stiles, age 22, provided the officer with a false name and other false information. Eventually, the officer was able to determine Stiles provided false information and learned his identity. 

Barton County Dispatch advised the officer that Stiles had a no bond warrant for his arrest out of Barton County. While the officer was placing Stiles under arrest for the warrant, Stiles attempted to discard a bag, later determined to contain methamphetamine. Stiles was also found to be in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Stiles was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked in lieu of no bond for the warrant, and $10,000 bond for the narcotics violation.&nbsp;
