A program that develops leaders for agriculture, business and rural communities recently celebrated its newest graduates at the same time it announced the next class of participants. The latest program includes participants from Great Bend, Ellinwood, St. John and Russell.

Jill Zimmerman, president of the Kansas Agricultural and Rural Leadership program, said 27 individuals of Class XV celebrated the completion of their advanced leadership development experience during the inaugural KARL Big Event June 4 in Manhattan.

Class XVI, announced the same day, includes 30 Kansans who will start the two-year experience later this year.

“KARL identifies, prepares, and connects aspiring leaders to positively impact Kansas agriculture and rural communities, and is part of the International Association of Program for Agriculture Leadership,” Zimmerman said. “KARL grows leaders who make a difference and go on to lead in agriculture, their businesses, communities and families.”

Since it was first delivered in 1989, more than 450 men and women have participated in KARL and are leaders and active volunteers in the agriculture industry and rural communities.

This is the first time KARL has had a combined event to celebrate the graduate fellows and announce the new class associates. Event speakers included&nbsp;American Countryside&nbsp;producer Andrew McCrea and Senator Jerry Moran.

“On behalf of the board and all alumni of KARL, we offer our sincere&nbsp;congratulations&nbsp;to the Class XV Fellows for their accomplishment and we welcome KARL Class XVI Associates into the program,” said Doug Hofbauer, board chairman of the KARL program. “We look forward to their future work as leaders who make a difference on behalf of agriculture and rural Kansas.”

Each class experiences a two-year curriculum of 52 seminar days across the state of Kansas; a national study tour to Washington, D.C. and to the Gettysburg Leadership Experience at the historic battleground; a domestic study tour; and an international study tour.

Zimmerman said that members of Class XVI will travel to Spain for their international study tour.

For more than six decades, the Wells family has sold quality furniture to area buyers. Now the family business is closing its doors. Wells Sit-n-Sleep, the final rendition of the furniture store, is liquidating its stock this weekend after 10 years of business.

"We're just having a hard time getting our upholstery or the cased goods," said Donna Wells, who co-owns Sit-and-Sleep with her husband, Brett. "We don't have as much trouble with the mattresses because we use the company from Haven. We can get that pretty timely. If someone wants to order a recliner, we can't even give them a time when we can have it in. Last time it was about 10 months."

The first Wells store opened in 1958. Brett's grandfather, Rene Wells, worked as a mortician and store manager at Garland Furniture in Garden City. He rolled the dice and decided to open his own business, moving to Great Bend and opening Well-Thompson Furniture in 1958. That store sold carpet and appliances, in addition to furniture, before Ed Thompson moved on to his own business venture in 1972.

Wells Furniture thrived at its location on north Main Street in Great Bend until 2009 when Brett and Donna decided to close those doors, in part because of the recession hitting the country at that time, and in part because their building was falling apart. Three years later, the couple opened Wells Sit-n-Sleep on 10th Street, with an emphasis on mattresses.

"We decided to come back with this on a smaller scale," said Donna. "After Brett had left the industry for a while, he discovered he really missed it because he liked the people. That's how we came up with this, because it was really the bread and butter of our furniture store."

The store survived an increase in mail-order mattresses and other advances in home shopping. Then COVID-19 hit in 2020. In-store sales slowed and, even three years later, material availability is unpredictable.

Then came the winds of Dec. 15, 2021. Some locations in Kansas saw gusts in excess of 100 miles per hour, kicking up a dust storm and shutting down businesses and schools across the state.

"December is one of our best months," Donna said. "The roof from the hotel over here came off, hit the side of our store, hit the truck, and it caused a vortex-like and shattered our front glass doors. They shattered into the store. Luckily Brett and Bryce were in the back. Before they could go get something to cover the doors up, it was 95-mile-an-hour wind, dirt blowing in all over our store. We were closed for a month trying to get all that cleaned up. That killed us. That kind of put the final nail in the coffin."

The Wells expect most of their inventory to be gone over the weekend, but the store will remain open until all items are sold.

"It's been a real pleasure serving Great Bend and the surrounding area," said Donna. "They've been really good to us through all these years."

Wells Sit-n-Sleep will remain open from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

After 60 years, Wells closing doors on Great Bend business

Scot Yarnell and Jill Hulse, native Kansans, were eager to accept positions at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation because they believe they can satisfy local needs that continue to grow.

Yarnell is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, while Hulse is a family practitioner studying to add (PMH NP) to her credentials.

This specialty addresses psychiatric illnesses for outpatients and inpatients.

“Since we are both family practitioners, we have the knowledge to differentiate between physical and mental-health issues,” Yarnell said. “I worked in emergency rooms and corrections facilities, and learned that sometimes patients have more of a psychiatric need than a physical need.”

While Yarnell and Hulse treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, they are especially interested in substance-use disorders.

“This is really big,” Yarnell commented. “The need for these services is definitely here.”

Statistically, he noted, 40 percent of people with an addiction have a mental illness independent of that addiction.

“Our experience guides us to offer services specific to each patient,” Yarnell noted. “If a patient is motivated, we can help. I always say ‘don’t give up on me and I won’t give up on you.’”

Hulse noted that she and Yarnell were searching for a smaller community in rural Kansas to establish their practices.

“We were living in Wichita and learned these positions became available,” she said. “We are happy to be in a place that has so many resources; we are definitely going to use them.

“For example, The Center has professional and compassionate therapists, case managers and a great support staff at its four locations. We are quite impressed with everyone here.”

When they lived in Wichita, they would see patients who traveled for several hours for appointments.

“But we know there are others who didn’t come because of a lack of transportation or they couldn’t take a day off work,” Hulse said. “We hope to help fill this gap in central and western Kansas.”

Hulse and Yarnell see patients age 6 and older at the Great Bend location, 5815 Broadway. They also have tele-health capabilities for The Center’s service area of Barton, Pawnee, Rice and Stafford counties.

Yarnell is from a farming background at Buffalo in southeast Kansas; Hulse is a Lindsborg native. They have rented a house in Great Bend.

Their backgrounds include experience in emergency and acute care, pediatrics, geriatrics, family medicine, psychiatry and addiction.

Yarnell earned his associate’s degree in nursing in 2013 at Neosho County Community College; bachelor’s in nursing in 2014 at Wichita State University; doctor of nursing practice in 2018 at WSU; and PMH NP last year at Washburn University. He also received a bachelor’s in chemistry, physics and plastics engineering technology in 2001 at Pittsburg State University.

His professional experience includes positions at Psychiatric &amp; Addiction Services, Holland Pathways Addiction Treatment Center, AdventHealth in Shawnee Mission, Via Christi St. Francis in Wichita, Medicalodges in Wichita and Deseret Health Care in Yates Center.

Hulse earned her bachelor’s in biochemistry and molecular biology in 2011 at Emporia State University, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing in 2012 and 2016, respectively, at the University of Miami, Coral Gables. She is studying for her PMH NP at Washburn.

Hulse has served as a family nurse practitioner at Psychiatric &amp; Addiction Services in Wichita, Wichita Medical Associates, Scott County Hospital, Gallup Indian Medical Center in Gallup, N.M., and Hunter Health Clinic in Wichita.

Julie Kramp, The Center’s executive director, said “our service area is incredibly fortunate Scot and Jill chose to join us in Great Bend. Their education, experience and skills, along with a passion for their work, has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life for the people we serve.

Specialists bring experience to The Center, enhance services

The COVID-19 pandemic is mostly known for its harm to the world at large. But a few good things emerged from that changing landscape. When Kansas Wetland Education Center's (KWEC) Mandy Kern was unable to visit area classrooms, she instead penned "Ava: A Year of Adventure in the Life of an American Avocet." The children's book was recently one of 15 selections to make the Kansas Notable Books list.

"It was pretty exciting that the work we put into it got recognized," Kern said. "The project came about because, through COVID, in my normal role I wasn't able to visit classrooms. We weren't doing field trips during the 2020 and 2021 school years. We still wanted to be able to tell the Cheyenne Bottoms story and the book came about because of that. We were able to talk about Cheyenne Bottoms, shorebirds, and the importance of wetlands for their migration, and be able to share that story with area students."

Through the Dorothy Morrison Foundation, KWEC was able to distribute the book to every K-6 classroom in Barton County, and every school and public library within a 70-mile radius also received a copy of the book.

Kern has since been able to continue her public readings of the book, sharing Ava's 1,000-mile trip from Laguna Madre in Texas and Mexico, to the wetlands at Cheyenne Bottoms - part of the annual migration that sees millions of birds make the stop in Barton County.

"I was able to go into every Great Bend public school during their library time and read the story, so that was pretty cool that we were still able to share the story and read it to each student," said Kern. "After I read the story we talked about different types of bird nests and let the kids try their hand at constructing their own bird nest to see if they thought it was easy or hard to build a nest like a bird."

Kern will be among the small field of authors awarded medals at the Kansas Book Festival at Washburn University on Sept. 24. The Kansas Notable Book list includes works set in Kansas or written by authors who reside in the state.

When Kansas Wetland Education Center's (KWEC) Mandy Kern was unable to visit area classrooms, she instead penned "Ava: A Year of Adventure in the Life of an American Avocet." The children's book was recently one of 15 selections to make the Kansas Notable Books list."It was pretty exciting that the work we put into it got recognized," Kern said. "The project came about because, through COVID, in my normal role I wasn't able to visit classrooms. We weren't doing field trips during the 2020 and 2021 school years. We still wanted to be able to tell the Cheyenne Bottoms story and the book came about because of that. We were able to talk about Cheyenne Bottoms, shorebirds, and the importance of wetlands for their migration, and be able to share that story with area students."Through the Dorothy Morrison Foundation, KWEC was able to distribute the book to every K-6 classroom in Barton County, and every school and public library within a 70-mile radius also received a copy of the book.Kern has since been able to continue her public readings of the book, sharing Ava's 1,000-mile trip from Laguna Madre in Texas and Mexico, to the wetlands at Cheyenne Bottoms - part of the annual migration that sees millions of birds make the stop in Barton County."I was able to go into every Great Bend public school during their library time and read the story, so that was pretty cool that we were still able to share the story and read it to each student," said Kern. "After I read the story we talked about different types of bird nests and let the kids try their hand at constructing their own bird nest to see if they thought it was easy or hard to build a nest like a bird."Kern will be among the small field of authors awarded medals at the Kansas Book Festival at Washburn University on Sept. 24. The Kansas Notable Book list includes works set in Kansas or written by authors who reside in the state.

The City of Great Bend is anticipating another large sum of funding to
come their way from the federal government as an additional disbursement of COVID-19
pandemic relief. Last year it was announced that Great Bend would be awarded
more than $2.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. An installment
of $1.1 million came their way last summer and Great Bend expects the final
disbursement of $1.1 million to arrive in July. 
When discussing future city projects at this week’s Great Bend City Council
work session, councilmember Alan Moeder noted he wanted to make sure there is
money available to cover the new police station to be built. 
"I know these projects are here, but I'm not in favor of doing anything until we figure out how we're going to fund the police station," said Moeder. "I don't want to commit to anything else until we figure out the police station." 
Inflation expenses have pushed the projected price of the 20,100 square-foot
police station to over $9.1 million. 
The city council discussed contributing portions of the ARPA funds towards a basketball
court at Brit Spaugh Park, automated meter reading for water meters, police surveillance
cameras and Heizer Park improvements.

drainage study of the city’s storm water system is a priority. 
"You've seen what the streets are like when we get heavy rains," said Francis. "They're holding water and we get localized flooding. The water isn't getting away for some reason. That's either we're undersized, have damages or blockages or a combination of things. Until we truly know what the condition is, we can't put together a plan to fix it."

Development to fuel an incentive program for downtown loft renovations. 
The city council expressed interest in phasing in improvements, but to be
mindful of the final budget&nbsp;expected to come in a couple of months for the new police station.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Fund new police station first, but Great Bend eyes projects

Greg Clark grew up in Great Bend and served the last eight years as the
Central Plains USD 112 Superintendent of Schools, overseeing the schools in
Claflin, Wilson and Holyrood. 

Clark stated leaving his hometown area was not an
easy decision, but ultimately decided to accept the superintendent’s position
for the Osawatomie school district. 
"Osawatomie will be a little bigger of a district," said Clark. "My responsibilities will still be as a superintendent, but I will have a lot more people help me in that job where I'm going. I've enjoyed my time at Central Plains, but am looking for new challenges." 
The school board in Osawatomie voted to hire Clark at the end of May and he will
begin working with USD 367 starting July 1. 
Clark departs the Central Plains district at a time when the school board voted in April
to move all Wilson Junior/Senior High School students to Claflin to attend
Central Plains High School by the 2023-2024 school year. The move is
anticipated to help with staffing shortages and provide more opportunities to
students after Wilson’s enrollment has dipped. 
"Wilson, I believe, is actively looking at joining the Sylvan-Lucas school district, which is fine because it's a little better fit for them," said Clark. "There are going to be challenges, like any rural school district, with enrollment and keeping families around the area to keep our schools full." 
Clark begins his career as a teacher, spent eight years as a principal and the
last eight years as Central Plains’ superintendent.&nbsp; &nbsp;

"Maybe it's time for some new eyes on the district," said Clark. "They can get somebody in here that will love it as much as I have."

I have seen a graphic several times recently that states:

When a flashlight grows dim or quits working, Do you just throw it away? Of course not. You change the batteries.

When a person messes up or finds themselves in a dark place, Do you cast them aside? Of course not. You help them change their batteries.

Some need AA…..attention and affection; Some need AAA….attention, affection, and acceptance; Some need C….Compassion; Some need D….Direction. And if they still don’t seem to shine; simply sit with them quietly and share your light.

I really appreciate this message on many levels. I have experienced those times when my own light feels pretty dim and I am grateful for those who shared a change of perspective with me or simply sat with me in the dusk.

At other times, I recognize that dark place in others and hope that I have shared a bit of sunlight of my own with them.

One of the key components of 4-H is a sense of belonging. From club leaders to fellow 4-H members, we work to share a sense of community, kindness, and respect to one another. It doesn’t mean that we always get along or agree but that we can empathize with another person.

I also know that it is important for each of us to recharge our batteries in order to share our light with others. That may mean curling up with a good book, an afternoon of laughter with friends, or time in nature. Whatever helps you to recharge, I hope that you will make time for that and help those around you to recognize the need and time for a recharge.

Keep learning. Keep showing grace and kindness.

BERAN: Shining a light

If you build it, they will come. A rebuild works just as well. This week city of Great Bend crews have been busy with upgrades to Al Burns Field in Veteran's Park. The updates mark the first major renovations to the field since the mid-1970s.

"Right now we are trying to upgrade the entire facilities out there," said Scott Keeler, the city's director of public lands. "We've had the grandstands repainted, we've put new dugouts in, and a new backstop with a cement wall and netting that we just installed (Wednesday). It's just been time to make some upgrades to the facility out there because there hasn't been much done in several years."

New light poles were installed around the ball fields and tennis courts in Nov. 2020. New turf was recently installed at Al Burns, and the latest round of improvements include repainted grandstands at three of the fields at Vets. A cement and netted backstop was added at Al Burns to provide a better viewing experience for spectators, and larger, cement dugouts will benefit players.

Al Burns is the subject of this year's renovations, but the city plans to continue with improvements to other fields in the future.

"We're also repainting both the grandstands on the north and south fields out there," Keeler said. "Over the next couple of years, we're going to be making upgrades to them, too."

Keeler said the city hopes to have Al Burns Field back to working condition for Saturday's scheduled Bat Cats games against Mulvane. More rain in the forecast may derail those plans.

Facelift continues for Al Burns Field in Great Bend

information-gathering phase as the city council prepares the 2023 budget. 
The Great Bend Public Library was among eight outside agencies that requested
funding for the upcoming year. Per usual, the library had the largest request
at $650,000. 
City council member Alan Moeder stated $650,000 is a lot of money and he wasn’t
entirely sure what the library does with the funding. (Listen below to Moeder's question and Library Director Gail Santy's response)

Library Director Gail Santy said when young professionals move into the area,
one of the first places they visit is the library. 
"When most people think about a library, they just think about books," said Santy. "That's one of the least things we do. We have numbers to all the resources in town. We provide genealogy. We do newspaper lookups and programing for after school, evenings and Saturdays." 
Along with books, the library offers digital books and a monthly movie night. 
Santy said the biggest part of the library’s budget is payroll. 
"We do pay well," said Santy. "I'm generally not higher than any other place in town, but we did not lose any employees over the last two years, which is uncommon." 
The city council will consider all requests from outside agencies when
finalizing the budget this summer.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Cop Shop (6/9)

The Barton County Historical Society will host a walking tour of downtown Great Bend for their first June monthly program. 

The program, led by local historian Justin Engleman, will begin at 7 p.m., Monday, June 20 at the Moses Memorial Band Shell in Lafayette Park. 

On this tour, participants will find out where F. W. Woolworth, Lischesky Dry Goods, the NuAces Saloon, Funk Furniture, Citizens National Bank, J. S. Dillon and Son Store #2, JCPenney, the White Way Cafe and the Farmers and Merchants Bank were located in downtown Great Bend. 

Engleman will also lead attendees through the former Masonic Temple and the offices above Renue, as well as talk about the former occupants of the buildings along the 1300 and 1400 blocks of Main Street. 

It is highly recommended that attendees should wear comfortable shoes and be able to navigate steps to enter the various buildings. If you have questions you can contact the Barton County Historical Society Museum and Village; hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

EDWARDS COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 5p.m. Thursday in Edwards County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Honda CRV driven by Nicholas Warren Tepper, 25, Stow, Massachusetts, was northbound on 70th Avenue at U.S. 50. The driver&nbsp; failed to yield to a westbound train.

 The train struck the Honda and rolled it into the ditch on the north side of the railroad tracks.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Tepper to Wesley Medical Center. He was properly restrained at the time of the accident, according to the KHP.

Driver hospitalized after train strikes SUV

Police officers are no stranger to the "highway to the danger zone." But for Great Bend officers last week, the trip was a fun one. GBPD Chief Steve Haulmark treated his officers to a private showing of "Top Gun: Maverick" by renting out Golden Belt Cinema 6 after the Memorial Day weekend.

"We did it as a team-building exercise," Haulmark said. "It was right after National Police Week. We just wanted to recognize the good work they're doing in the community."

Haulmark said not all of his officers were able to make it into the movies, but most of them enjoyed the special occasion.

"A few weren't able to make it due to being out of town or whatever," he said, "but the majority of folks did."

"Top Gun: Maverick," a follow-up to the 1986 original starring Tom Cruise, has been a smashing success at the box office. The film reportedly raked in $156 million domestically over Memorial Day weekend, beating 2007's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World End" by $3 million for the record. With a budget of $170 million, the sequel is expected to clear more than $900 million at the box office worldwide. Released in more than 4,700 North-American theaters, it also set the record for the widest release of all time.

It’s a sign of the season – political campaigning and the posting of campaign signs. The Kansas Department of Transportation reminds the public that all political campaign signs or billboards are prohibited from being placed on state right of way.

By law, all right of way on state highways is exclusively for public highway purposes. Only regulatory, guide signs and warning signs placed by KDOT are allowed on the 9,500-mile state highway system. KDOT has jurisdiction over all interstate, Kansas and U.S. routes.

When KDOT maintenance crews find political or business advertising on state right of way, the signs will be removed immediately and without notice. All such signs will then be taken to the closest KDOT Subarea office. Political campaign signs not retrieved from the Subarea offices will be disposed of after the election.

Political campaign advertising is allowed on private property bordering state right of way. However, people placing or erecting signs on private property must first obtain permission from the property owner.

A state law passed in 2015 related to placement of campaign signs on city- or county-owned right of way does not apply to state highway right of way. Persons placing signs on city street or county road right of way should consult the local jurisdiction on any rules.

Some Great Bend volunteers are ready for round two of their "Damn it, Do it!" campaign. Last June, the group worked to clean up properties in the 900 block of Jefferson. On Sept. 24, the project turns its attention to the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Odell Street.

"It's not just cleaning yards, it's also going to be helping to fix downed gutters and things of that nature. We've got some spots where we may end up having to patch some roofs. We may also need to do some trim boards up there, some fascia boards."

Last year, more than 40 volunteers showed up for the inaugural campaign, refurbishing the exterior of four homes over the course of a Saturday.

"It was fantastic," Fairchild said. "We have people that lived in the dwellings that were absolutely thankful. We also had people around the area and others in the community, how just cleaning up even a small piece of the community really ups that pride."

Fairchild said area properties can fall into disarray for a variety of reasons. The goal of Damn It, Do It is to provide community outreach for those unable to do repairs themselves.

"You get people who think these things go into disrepair or look as they do because people just don't care," he said. "A lot of time it's because they don't have the ability or the time. You get a lot of people who are older or may have an ailment that doesn't allow them to get out and take care of the property as they would like to. We're just coming along and putting community back into the community."

Golden Belt's invitation to participate in Giving Tuesday

Tricia Schlessiger has worn many hats in Ellinwood: mother, wife farmer, coach, and school board member to name a few. Now she wants to put those everyday skills to use in local government. Schlessiger recently announced her candidacy for District 4 of the Barton County Commission.

"If everyday people like myself don't step up and take these leadership roles, then we get handed whoever will take that role," Schlessiger said. "So everyday people like myself have to step up and do that. We're super excited to see what we can do if we get the chance."

Schlessiger said interest in local government has been there, but as the mother of six kids, that has not always been the case with time. 

"We'll be down to just two in high school this next year," she said. "With six kids it was pretty intense for a while there with school and everything. I think now I have time to put my energy toward something different. I've been pretty active in Ellinwood. I'm on quite a few committees there. I think I'd like to roll that in the next direction for the county."

Schlessiger earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Kansas State University, and a graduate degree in banking from the University of Wisconsin. She has 20-plus years of experience in the banking industry, and alongside her husband, Joe, raised their six children on a family farm. 

Schlessiger keeps busy serving her community as a 4-H leader, volleyball coach, and Ellinwood Rotarian. She has served on the boards at St. John's Lutheran Church and St. John's Child Development Center. She also served as township treasurer and wants to use that experience to help stretch the taxpayer dollar.

"I feel like we have got to find ways to do more because we cannot keep increasing taxes. The current county commission has done an amazing job with that, but I guess I'm always looking for ways to become more efficient and save taxpayer dollars."More specifically, Schlessiger wants to improve housing opportunities for county residents, especially those in her district, and give families easier access to daycare. "We have got to address housing in Ellinwood," she said. "Really my whole district, we just don't have enough housing for people. In Ellinwood, we probably still need more daycare spots for people to move into town and have adequate daycare for their kids. That's kind of Ellinwood-specific, but county-wide, we're short on daycare spots as well."Jon Prescott is the current Barton County Commissioner for District 4 that serves the southern portion of the county, including Ellinwood and Pawnee Rock.
