Great Bend High School’s Internship Program has launched 13 seniors into the local workforce this fall, giving students the opportunity put classroom learning to practical use in the&nbsp;workplace.

In the first academic year for this program, 13 students received placement at seven local employers who represent a wide-variety of industries. The Internship Program is a capstone for GBHS’ Career and Technical Education tracts. Interns must meet high academic and attendance standards before applying and interviewing for an internship placement with a host business partner.

“The GBHS Internship Program is beneficial for everyone involved,” said Lacy Wolters, ACT &amp; Career Coordinator at GBHS. “For students, the goal is to increase their knowledge of workplace skills and receive on-the-job experience that build upon what they’ve learned in the classroom. For employers, they get to influence career training, help students make informed educational and career choices, and gain access to an expanded pool of qualified applicants. The list of benefits goes on and on, it’s really a ‘win’ for everyone involved!”

By the end of this first semester, each intern will have logged roughly 60 hours at his or her host business. Some will continue their work at their host business with another 60 hours in the spring semester.

“Recruiting is a big reason we patriciate in opportunities like this,” said Dr. Ty Brunswig, veterinarian at Animal Medical Center. “For students who are interested in a medical career of some type, we want to provide exposure to veterinary medicine and let them get to know us and our practice with the hope that they may come back to our community.”

In addition to on-the-job experience, the GBHS Internship Program includes a classroom component that Wolters describes as a powerful time of reflection.

“On Fridays, we meet as a class to record observations from the week,” said Wolters. “This provides an opportunity for students to share experiences with their peers, formulate questions for their host businesses, and work on portfolio items.”

Interns will showcase their digital portfolios at a special event scheduled for Dec. 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Great Bend High School. Families, host businesses, as well as prospective interns for the 23-24 school year are invited to attend.

Great Bend students gain career insight with internship program

Joseph McNett was back in Barton County District Court last Friday morning facing allegations that he had violated his probation. 

McNett had been charged in Sedgwick County for rape, two counts of aggravated criminal sodomy and aggravated sexual battery. 

The State presented evidence of those new crimes, as well as evidence of other probation violations. After the close of evidence, and the arguments of counsel, District Court Judge Carey Hipp found that McNett had violated his probation by committing new crimes, revoked his probation and ordered him to serve his underlying prison sentence of 49 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections. 

The State of Kansas was represented by Assistant Barton County Attorney Colin Reynolds. The Defendant was represented by Donald E Anderson II.

Barton Co. Court: Probation revoked for man charged with rape

The democratic process is an ever-changing one. At Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting, outgoing Commissioner Kirby Krier tried to tackle an issue that he feels may impact the county in the future. In the end, the body voted 3-2 against a resolution that would prohibit a sitting commissioner from voting on specific matters that would pertain to family members who are county employees.

"We have an unusual circumstance right now, and maybe again in the future, too, but we need to address it now," Krier said. "There might be a conflict of interest between, say, a sitting commissioner and a maybe a brother/sister, mother/father, son/daughter that may be a director of some department in the county. This would address that."

More specifically, the resolution would have prohibited commissioners from making motions or voting on agenda items that would directly affect employees with familiar relationships. The resolution would have applied only to specific items like salary increases, and not items that would affect an entire department or the annual budget.

County Counselor Patrick Hoffman said there are established policies in place already, and he was not sure the resolution would be legally binding for future commissioners.

"The current system is all commissioners should always recuse themselves if there is a possible perception from the public of a conflict of interest," he said. "I trust all the commissioners we have to do that. I'm not completely certain that you can legally bind future commissioners who are elected by the public to not vote on things just because we have a policy."

Krier countered that was Hoffman's opinion, and Commissioner Jon Prescott asked if that meant future commissioners would not have to abide by policies set by the body. Krier said future commissioners could always rescind the resolution.

"The theory of government is, the public elects the commissioners, and as elected officials, they have certain powers inherently, including the power to vote on things," Hoffman said. "You're telling future people who are put in by the voters what they can and can't vote for."

Outgoing Commissioner Jennifer Schartz said the body has encountered these issues before and did not need a resolution then to adequately address the issue.

"My policy has always been if it ain't broke, don't fix it," she said. "We have had people who have had to recuse themselves from votes in the past. I think we should trust those incoming commissioners to do the same. They're going to do the right thing. If they aren't, they can be called on by the other commissioners."

Schartz, along with Shawn Hutchinson and Barb Esfeld, voted against the resolution. Krier and Prescott voted in favor.

"I think the policy stated in this resolution is a good general principle, but I do worry in general about future commissioners could be elected and say they don't know if they're bound by these resolutions," Hoffman said. "State statutes give me the authority to do certain things as a commissioner."

Six years removed from graduating from Larned High School, Landon Erway
is emerging as a leader in the community that he always knew he wanted to come
home to. 
Erway was named the Emerging Leader of the Year at the Larned Area Chamber of
Commerce’s banquet last month. 
“All the candidates for the award were told to stand up at the ceremony,” said
Erway. “I looked around and it was a pretty impressive group of people
standing. I was honored to receive the award.” 
After graduating from LHS in 2016, Erway went to Fort Hays State University and
played baseball for the Tigers. Erway graduated from Fort Hays in three years
and timed things out to take over his grandfather’s State Farm Agency in Larned
as an insurance agent. 
“My grandpa retired from State Farm, and I ended up getting selected at the age
of 22 to run the local agency,” said Erway. “They took a chance on me, being
that young, but since then we’ve been growing with three awesome team members.”

Erway said it was always in his heart to come back to Larned, but he didn’t
know the move would come so quickly. 
“It was always my intention to come back,” said Erway. “I love this town. I
have a heart for the town. My wife was able to find a teaching job and here we
are.” 
Erway now sits on the Larned Chamber &amp; Economic Development board and is making a push to
revitalize downtown. 
“I started the Downtown Larned Podcast,” said Erway. “I’ve been interviewing
business owners and community members in hopes to lighting a match under us and
see some good change.” 
Erway added his future plans focus on growing State Farm and helping more
people. 
“I just want to make Larned a better place to live for more people,” added
Erway.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

With cooler temperatures here to stay, no doubt you will be switching on your furnace. Now is a good time to provide a reminder about the dangers of Carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide (CO) is of greatest concern because it can be fatal. Hundreds of people are killed each year in the United States by CO in their homes.

Carbon monoxide can build up in an enclosed space. The gas is odorless and colorless, so you may not sense what is making you sick. CO reduces the ability of hemoglobin in the blood to carry oxygen. Health effects or symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to other illnesses, such as flu and allergies. The Symptoms of exposure to low doses of CO include nausea, dizziness, weakness, and muscle aches. Higher doses of CO can cause impaired judgement, paralysis, coma and death.

So how does a buildup of carbon monoxide typically occur? There are several ways, so keep reading for the answer.

· Flues or chimneys from combustion equipment become blocked (such as by a bird’s nest) disconnected, rusted or broken. Thus pollutants from combustion equipment, high in CO, cannot be exhausted to the outside.

· A fuel burning appliance, such as a furnace has a cracked heat exchanger, allowing combustion gases into the living spaces instead of being exhausted up a chimney or flue.

· Unvented fuel-burning (such as kerosene or gas) heaters are operated in the home without adequate ventilation.

· Charcoal cookers, grills, or hibachis are operated in the home.

· Gas ovens improperly used for space heating.

Last year the carbon monoxide detector we had plugged in in our basement family room made quite a screeching noise. Detectors do have a life span so make sure yours is operating properly. Once we replaced it with a new detector everything returned to normal. Remember though, that installing a CO detector does not replace regular maintenance, inspection and safe operation of combustion equipment.

Sewer Rate &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2015, Terry Esfeld with Great Bend Livestock Company addressed the governing body to request that the sewer bill for the business he owns located on Railroad Avenue be reduced. He uses the business to house cattle for a few months of the year at which time they consume a great deal of water that is not disposed of down the sewer. At that time the governing body approved to charge $25 per month for sewer so long as Esfeld is the owner of the business, and the business is operated as currently operated. Due to sewer staff changes at the Front Door that was not aware of this agreement, his bill was calculated for a new sewer rate this year which increased by approximately $240. City administration reduced his sewer rate back to $25. However, it has been 7 years and staff felt this item should come back for council to re-evaluate his sewer rate.

&nbsp; &nbsp;6. Great Bend Events Center - Charges 10% Fee &amp; Extra Day Fee &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Several years ago, city staff, the CVB Advisory Board and the mayor decided that they should charge caterers 10% of their total food and alcohol receipts for all events. This practice was not well enforced. With the Events Center needing to self-sufficient, correct rental fees is a key component, according to the city. The city notified everyone that beginning in 2023, they would strictly enforce the 10% rule.

&nbsp; &nbsp;7. Airport FBO Agreement &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; On Oct. 28, 2022, the Great Bend Airport Advisory Committee had concern with the FBO agreement with P&amp;N Flight and Charter. Foremost, the lack of communication and presence. The committee recommends that the city take action to accomplish a remedy to this situation by having the City Attorney send a letter to Mr. Norton and P&amp;N asking what his intentions are and requesting that if he intends to assign the FBO agreement, that he makes a request of the city by identifying the assignee and requesting an assignment.

Following the meeting, the city council will conduct a work session to discuss Rural Housing Incentive Districts (RHID).

Sewer Rate &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2015, Terry Esfeld with Great Bend Livestock Company addressed the governing body to request that the sewer bill for the business he owns located on Railroad Avenue be reduced. He uses the business to house cattle for a few months of the year at which time they consume a great deal of water that is not disposed of down the sewer. At that time the governing body approved to charge $25 per month for sewer so long as Esfeld is the owner of the business, and the business is operated as currently operated. Due to sewer staff changes at the Front Door that was not aware of this agreement, his bill was calculated for a new sewer rate this year which increased by approximately $240. City administration reduced his sewer rate back to $25. However, it has been 7 years and staff felt this item should come back for council to re-evaluate his sewer rate.&nbsp; &nbsp;6. Great Bend Events Center - Charges 10% Fee &amp; Extra Day Fee &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Several years ago, city staff, the CVB Advisory Board and the mayor decided that they should charge caterers 10% of their total food and alcohol receipts for all events. This practice was not well enforced. With the Events Center needing to self-sufficient, correct rental fees is a key component, according to the city. The city notified everyone that beginning in 2023, they would strictly enforce the 10% rule.&nbsp; &nbsp;7. Airport FBO Agreement &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; On Oct. 28, 2022, the Great Bend Airport Advisory Committee had concern with the FBO agreement with P&amp;N Flight and Charter. Foremost, the lack of communication and presence. The committee recommends that the city take action to accomplish a remedy to this situation by having the City Attorney send a letter to Mr. Norton and P&amp;N asking what his intentions are and requesting that if he intends to assign the FBO agreement, that he makes a request of the city by identifying the assignee and requesting an assignment.ADJOURNMENTFollowing the meeting, the city council will conduct a work session to discuss Rural Housing Incentive Districts (RHID).

drought monitor report as of Tuesday, November 1, indicates a continued
intensification of drought conditions for Kansas.&nbsp; In this area, we are in extreme drought with
exceptional drought inching closer.&nbsp;
Exceptional drought is in southern Stafford County and most of
Pawnee.&nbsp; If this continues, it will be in
Western Barton County next week.&nbsp; For
comparison, this is worse than 2012 and it is not even close.&nbsp; The six to ten-day outlook (November 8 to 12)
indicates a 40 to 60% chance of above normal temperatures and a 40 to 50%
chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp;
Remember that even twice our normal rainfall isn’t much.&nbsp; It would at continue to help the wheat to
hang on.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day
outlook (November 10 to 16) indicates a 40 to 50% chance of below normal temperatures
and a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; It does appear that a new weather pattern is establishing
itself and it seems at least slightly more favorable.&nbsp; Time will tell.

We live in a world of “the most,” “the
greatest,” and “the best.”&nbsp; Certainly as
a business and farming/ranching is a business, the goal is to maximize
profits.&nbsp; However, too often this is
confused with maximizing yields.&nbsp;
Maximizing yields simply will not maximize profits and in facts
decreases profits.&nbsp; The goal should be to
“optimize” yields. The Law of Diminishing returns explains why as input costs
will be great to maximize yields than the yield received in return.&nbsp; Today though, let’s focus on what to do with
limited resources.&nbsp; This includes
everything from the increased costs du to significant price increases to
limiting resources such as precipitation and irrigation water and temperature
extremes.&nbsp; What can a producer do to
maximize profits in these challenging economic and climatic times?

The Barton Community College Instrumental Music Department will present its fall concert “With Gratitude,” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Fine Arts Auditorium. Admission is free.

The experience will feature the Prairie Winds Concert Band, Barton Jazz Ensemble, and trumpet soloist Joel Lauridsen.

Barton Music Department to host instrumental concert 'With Gratitude'

Nick Squires has been selected as the Kansas Department of Transportation District Five&nbsp;Engineer.

Squires graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in mechanical engineering. He started his career with KDOT as a college intern before being hired in 2003 in the Construction Office in Pratt. In 2004, Squires was promoted to Pratt Area Construction Engineer. From there he went on to serve as the District Five Construction and Materials Engineer in 2018.

District Five is responsible for construction and maintenance including snow and ice removal on the 4,949 miles of state highways in the area. It includes 18 counties: Rush, Pawnee, Edwards, Kiowa, Comanche, Barton, Stafford, Pratt, Barber, Rice, Reno, Kingman, Harper, Harvey, Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley.

“This role has an entirely different set of challenges than what I have previously been accustomed to, and it felt like the right time to step in and tackle them. It will be different, but the good thing is we have a lot of great people in District Five that are fantastic at their job,” Squires said. “I hope I can continue to help them do what they do best.”

Squires has been married to his wife, Shannon,&nbsp;for 19 years, and they have two daughters, Danielle and Erin. He enjoys spending time with his family, working on old cars and doing woodworking.

Squires named KDOT District Five Engineer for Barton Co. area

Area veterans will be honored at several ceremonies and events on Friday, Nov. 11 as part of Veterans Day. Barton County announced at last Wednesday's commission meeting that a new stone will be dedicated at Golden Belt Memorial Park that day, and the commission also signed Proclamation 2022-17: Operation Green Light for Veterans.

"The initiative will shine a light on the issues veterans face and the resources available at the county, state, and federal levels," explained Barton County Director of Operations Matt Patzner. "As lighting the courthouse green has been problematic, it's been suggested the county light the Golden Belt Veterans Memorial. Two solar-powered green lights have been purchased that will be set in a manner that will spotlight the center stone."

The county purchased two solar-powered lights that can be turned green for the week of Nov. 7-13. Commissioner Jennifer Schartz suggested keeping the lights operational after Nov. 13 to provide more light at the memorial, located north of Great Bend at 59 NW 50 Road. 

A new stone will be dedicated at the memorial as part of a ceremony Friday at 1:30 p.m. Memorial Parks Advisory Committee Member Mick Lang told the commission Stone IV should be in place by then. Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson, a veteran, will speak at the ceremony, which will also include musical selections. Hutchinson encouraged other commissioners and commissioner-elects to attend.

Stone IV will include the names of 332 local veterans ranging from the Civil and Spanish Wars to the present.

Green light, new stone planned for Golden Belt Vets Memorial

The three-sport high school athlete is fairly common.
Rubi Spray, or Rubi Torres as she was known 11 years ago, was the rare
four-sport athlete, running track and cross country, swimming, playing soccer, and cheering for
Great Bend High School during a busy career. That work ethic paid off in high school, and as a runner
and student at Wichita’s Newman University. In February of next year, Spray will be
inducted into the Newman Sports Hall of Fame.

In her time at Newman, Spray developed a close
relationship with cross country coach Josh Schepis. He recruited her during her
senior year and later stepped in for the father-daughter dance at her wedding. He
also delivered the news of her induction into the Hall of Fame.

“After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I’m pretty sure
I asked him if he was joking,” Spray said. “It’s hard to find the words to
describe the emotions that you feel. It’s not really something you ever imagine
you would accomplish. 

“When I think of the little girl who was beating the boys
in PE, you just never realize that’s something you’re ever going to accomplish.
I thought it was going to be a big deal just going to college because that was
something I never even thought I was even going to be able to do or afford. Then
you look back and think, I’m going to be in the Hall of Fame. That’s a little
crazy to wrap your mind around.”

Spray got a running start with the Golden Belt track team
in elementary school. She always enjoyed running and beat the boys at school
in the mile run. In middle school, Josh Lee proved to be more than a math
teacher as he guided her into the foreign sport of cross country.

“If it weren’t
for him, none of this would have ever been possible," Spray said. "I don’t know that I ever
would have given it a shot. It was a couple conversations, a couple class times
he was convincing me to try out. I always share that story because it goes to
show you the impact our teachers have on us. He is a lot to thank for the
success I had because it just would have never happened. I probably would have
still been running track.”

Spray did not run cross country as a freshman in 2007,
but joined a loaded Lady Panther track team in 2008 and 2009. By her junior
year, she won the 1600m Western Athletic Conference title and qualified for
state in the 4x800m relay. She medaled at state in both the 1600m run (7th)
and the 3200m run (6th) that year. She finished fourth at state in
both individual events a year later as a senior.

In her debut cross country season for the Lady Panthers
in 2008, Spray made a splash with a fifth-place finish at state. In her junior
year, she finished eighth at state to lead her team to a seventh-place finish.
She earned all-state honors as a senior with a fifth-place finish at state,
setting a new 4K GBHS record that season.

Spray said the race never began until the first mile, at
which point she was worried about pacing and strategy. The last 2-plus miles
became a matter of the heart.

“At that point, your mind is telling you that you’re
tired, you want to quit, this hurts – your lungs feel like they just got shot
out of you,” she said. “During that part of the race, that’s when you have to
shut everything else out and just go with your heart. I think that’s what
drives a lot of cross country runners, and why they put themselves through that
excruciating pain, because it’s you and yourself. That’s what you’ve got.”

All her success garnered some attention from colleges.
Spray had her eyes set on a Div. I scholarship. Instead, she visited Newman
University and fell in love, even though her desired nursing studies meant saying
goodbye to her track career due to conflicts between the life of a student and
the life of an athlete.

“When Josh Schepis came to me, I let him know I wanted to
be a nursing major, and that was my goal,” Spray said. “I wanted to serve
others in my career. If you know Newman, you know the program is just well-known.
If you tell people and your patients you went to Newman, they just know who you
are, and the great school you went to. He told me it’s going to be really hard
but we’re going to make it work.”

In her four years at Newman, Spray was a four-time
all-conference runner. In 2012, she earned all-academic honors reserved for a
select few who meet both academic and performance standards on the cross
country course. She ran the top-three 5K times in school history during her
senior season, becoming the first and only Lady Jet to break 18 minutes with a
17:59 time on the course in Hays. She ranks second all-time at Newman in the 4K.

But if she loved running, Spray always had ambitions of
returning to a small town and serving that community as a nurse. Spray again
calls Great Bend home, and she’s worked at Rice County District Hospital for
the last four-plus years.

“I am thankful I get to be back in the community that
raised me, and now I get to raise my children,” she said. “I work in a small,
rural hospital, and I get to serve my patients. I don’t think there’s anything
greater than that. I get to go to work and help people feel better, and I’m
raising the next generation. Hopefully, my children can pick up on some of the
things I’m passionate about.”

Rubi married Kameron Spray in 2018, and together the
couple has two children: Theo, 4, and Chloe, 1. Theo already takes after his
mother, enjoying a good run on the soccer field or between the bases on the
diamond. Rubi hopes to instill some of her lessons and passions in her
children.

“I think the biggest takeaway from all of this, for me, is
there are going to be a lot of obstacles in your way, and a lot of things you
have to overcome,” she said. “But if you stay determined, if you work really
hard, and you lean on the people who are always in your corner encouraging you –
because there are going to be times you’re just not sure. If you lean on those
people who are rooting for you, you can accomplish great things.”

Rubi is the daughter of Zila Cervantes. The 2023 Newman University Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Feb. 4, 2023.

and the 3200m run (6th) that year. She finished fourth at state in
both individual events a year later as a senior.In her debut cross country season for the Lady Panthers
in 2008, Spray made a splash with a fifth-place finish at state. In her junior
year, she finished eighth at state to lead her team to a seventh-place finish.
She earned all-state honors as a senior with a fifth-place finish at state,
setting a new 4K GBHS record that season.Spray said the race never began until the first mile, at
which point she was worried about pacing and strategy. The last 2-plus miles
became a matter of the heart.“At that point, your mind is telling you that you’re
tired, you want to quit, this hurts – your lungs feel like they just got shot
out of you,” she said. “During that part of the race, that’s when you have to
shut everything else out and just go with your heart. I think that’s what
drives a lot of cross country runners, and why they put themselves through that
excruciating pain, because it’s you and yourself. That’s what you’ve got.”All her success garnered some attention from colleges.
Spray had her eyes set on a Div. I scholarship. Instead, she visited Newman
University and fell in love, even though her desired nursing studies meant saying
goodbye to her track career due to conflicts between the life of a student and
the life of an athlete.<figure>

 </figure>“When Josh Schepis came to me, I let him know I wanted to
be a nursing major, and that was my goal,” Spray said. “I wanted to serve
others in my career. If you know Newman, you know the program is just well-known.
If you tell people and your patients you went to Newman, they just know who you
are, and the great school you went to. He told me it’s going to be really hard
but we’re going to make it work.”In her four years at Newman, Spray was a four-time
all-conference runner. In 2012, she earned all-academic honors reserved for a
select few who meet both academic and performance standards on the cross
country course. She ran the top-three 5K times in school history during her
senior season, becoming the first and only Lady Jet to break 18 minutes with a
17:59 time on the course in Hays. She ranks second all-time at Newman in the 4K.<figure>

 </figure>But if she loved running, Spray always had ambitions of
returning to a small town and serving that community as a nurse. Spray again
calls Great Bend home, and she’s worked at Rice County District Hospital for
the last four-plus years.“I am thankful I get to be back in the community that
raised me, and now I get to raise my children,” she said. “I work in a small,
rural hospital, and I get to serve my patients. I don’t think there’s anything
greater than that. I get to go to work and help people feel better, and I’m
raising the next generation. Hopefully, my children can pick up on some of the
things I’m passionate about.”Rubi married Kameron Spray in 2018, and together the
couple has two children: Theo, 4, and Chloe, 1. Theo already takes after his
mother, enjoying a good run on the soccer field or between the bases on the
diamond. Rubi hopes to instill some of her lessons and passions in her
children.“I think the biggest takeaway from all of this, for me, is
there are going to be a lot of obstacles in your way, and a lot of things you
have to overcome,” she said. “But if you stay determined, if you work really
hard, and you lean on the people who are always in your corner encouraging you –
because there are going to be times you’re just not sure. If you lean on those
people who are rooting for you, you can accomplish great things.”Rubi is the daughter of Zila Cervantes. The 2023 Newman University Hall of Fame class will be inducted on Feb. 4, 2023.

In this case, I’m not referring to the temperature. HOTT is an acronym for Hispanics Of Today and Tomorrow, an organization that is working to promote higher education opportunities for Hispanic students in the Emporia area.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rebeca Herrera and Patricia Saenz-Reyes of Emporia are active in&nbsp;Hispanics Of Today and Tomorrow. Rebeca is of Spanish and Mexican descent and grew up in Atlanta.&nbsp;

“Moving from&nbsp;a large metropolitan city in the east to the great plains of the Midwest was a culture shock,” she said. “I have now been in Emporia for four years. This wonderful community has welcomed me with open arms.”&nbsp;

She is now&nbsp;membership director at the Emporia Area Chamber of Commerce.&nbsp;

Saenz-Reyes is a self-described “border baby,” born in El Paso. Her mother is an American citizen and her father is Mexican. Patricia went to school in Juarez, Mexico until the 9th grade when she transferred to El Paso to continue her education.&nbsp;

Her career took her to west Texas where she was an insurance executive before coming to Emporia. Now she is the migrant community resource coordinator and student and family resource specialist with the Emporia school district.&nbsp;

“HOTT started in 1999 with just six members,” Saenz-Reyes said. “People saw there was a need for more support for Hispanic students to continue into higher education.”&nbsp;

Emporia, at the crossroads of Interstates 35 and 335, has long been a major location for significant employers. “Actually, it goes back to the 1930s when the Santa Fe railroad was needing workers,” Saenz-Reyes said. The 1960s saw large beef packing operations and other manufacturers come to Emporia. Job opportunities attracted a diverse workforce.&nbsp;

According to data from the Emporia school district, in 1992 Hispanics made up 11.3% of the student population. By 2022, that number was 47.5%.&nbsp;

HOTT members sought to enhance scholarship opportunities for Hispanic youth. They developed two big festivals to raise funds for scholarships. One is Cinco de Mayo in the spring, and the other is Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, in the fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Both events involve lots of food and fun. “All of the proceeds from our fried taco sales go to the scholarships,” Herrera said. “It’s super nice to see our community embracing our culture.”&nbsp;

Cinco de Mayo is, of course, held on the fifth of May. It commemorates Mexican history and culture.&nbsp;

Day of the Dead occurs in late October, but is not a Halloween event. “It is more of a spiritual day to celebrate those who have passed,” Saenz-Reyes said. “We bring out shrines, light candles, and prepare favorite foods of our departed loved ones.”&nbsp;

In Emporia, Day of the Dead is a day-long festival, featuring Latino artists, games, prizes and a downtown parade.&nbsp;&nbsp;Who emcees the parade? Rebeca Herrera and Patricia Saenz-Reyes. As many as 3,000 people attend this event.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Not only are these events unifying for Emporia, they also bring together diverse groups within the Hispanic community itself. “People may assume that all Hispanics are from Mexico, but we have people here from Central and South America, Cuba and Puerto Rico,” Saenz-Reyes said. “There are also international students at Emporia State (University).”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Together, these events have raised $100,000 for scholarships. What’s more, Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College will match them. That’s remarkable in a rural community like Emporia, population 24,139 people. Now, that’s rural.&nbsp;

One of the scholarship recipients was Omar Herrera, who used his scholarship to help earn a masters degree in architecture at K-State. Omar is now Rebeca’s husband. He serves as&nbsp;the facility planner project manager with university facilities at Emporia State University.&nbsp;

Changing diapers, making lunch, or getting backpacks ready for the next day can seem like mundane chores for parents. However, these can be opportunities in our daily routines that gives parents not only time to spend with their children but also use as a chance to bond and have fun.

Families are busy, I get that! Slowing down and taking the opportunity to do a chore with a child not only can help the child bond with the parent or caregiver but the child also learns valuable skills during the process. For example, changing a diaper can be a boring and messy task. However, a parent can take this opportunity to have fun with the child. Singing a song or a saying a fun rhyme can help distract the child from the task but also gives the child an opportunity to engage with their parent or caregiver and learn social emotional skills.

Being responsive to children is a key element of bonding with a child. Being responsive means we look at, touch, or talk to our children when they try to get our attention. Children learn to trust us when respond to them and we meet their needs. Dr. Bradford Wiles, K-State Research and Extension Specialist and Associate Professor states, “That bond is really around forming trust between each other (and) having an emotional connection. That feeling of security that is a foundation. Children know that their primary caregiver is a secure base from which they can explore their world. They can always turn back to that secure base.”

When a baby is born they want to be near their mother or parent most of the time. This is their safe place and the natural habitat of a newborn. However, as the baby becomes more mobile (crawling) and explores their environment they will move farther away from their mother or primary caregiver. They usually come back and check in on a fairly regular basis with mom or primary caregiver. This shows secure attachment of the child to the primary caregiver which is important for their entire life and the relationships they will have.

As children get older, they form more relationships with family, friends, and the community. The parent still plays an important role though as the child grows so that is why using routine opportunities throughout the day to check in is a great way to continue that relationship.

KINGMAN COUNTY —A Kansas woman died in an accident just before 10a.m. Saturday in Kingman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2005 Ford Escape driven by Mary A. Yahnke, 78, Norwich, was northbound on SE 100 Avenue three and one half miles south of Murdock.

&nbsp;The driver failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the passenger side of an eastbound 1997 Chevy 1500 driven by Jeffrey Lynn&nbsp; Krehbiel, 77, Wichita.&nbsp; Both vehicles entered the northeast ditch and rolled.

Yahnke was pronounced dead at the scene and transported&nbsp;Livingston Funeral Home. EMS transported&nbsp; Krehbiel to Via Christi in Wichita. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued several public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae.&nbsp;

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to October 31, as do the harmful algae blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. This year, the season ends with some water bodies still on active advisory. These advisories will be lifted in consultation with lake managers when blooms have dissipated. However, we know that risks may extend past the recreation season, for example, for hunting dogs. Kansans should remain vigilant year-round.

A harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.
