GREAT BEND, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man has been charged in the 1980 shooting death of a 23-year-old neighbor after investigators who reexamined her death turned up new evidence, authorities said.

Kansas Bureau of Investigation officers arrested 68-year-old Steven Hanks, of Burden, on Thursday on a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Mary Robin Walter, who was a wife, mother and nursing school student when she was killed, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir said at a news conference Friday. He is jailed on $500,000 bond and doesn't have an attorney, according to court records.

Bellendir said Detective Sgt. Adam Hales decided in April to reopen the investigation into the Jan. 24, 1980, killing, which happened at a trailer park near the airport in Great Bend, a city of about 15,000 residents in central Kansas.

"After taking a fresh look at the case, it became evident that some of the information had been initially overlooked and some had been added at a later date," the sheriff said. "This was unknown to the original investigators."

Bellendir directed two additional officers to join the investigation. In October, new evidence was discovered, though authorities declined to disclose it.

Bellendir said Hanks was investigated as a suspect immediately after the shooting, "but the case went cold." He didn't disclose a possible motive for the killing.

Hanks spent time in prison for another crime. He was arrested in 1981 and charged with rape, battery, robbery and burglary. He was sentenced in 1983 and discharged in 1993, according to online records from the Kansas Department of Corrections.

A joint daycare project continues to come to fruition in St. John. Stafford County Economic Development began making headway on the new facility in May. With the help of funds from the city of St. John and Stafford County Commission, a modular building was purchased for the daycare site at 413 N. Pearl in St. John. That building arrived in mid-November, and Eco Devo Director Kathleen Norman said progress now continues inside.

"The building arrived and has been set up and anchored," she said. "Right now, there's still a fair bit of coordination in terms of getting it ready. The flooring needs to be replaced, we're having kitchenettes installed."

Sewer, water, and electric were being installed this week, and the fire marshal will inspect the facility later this month. Now the biggest wait will be getting licensed daycares into the facility, which Norman said could be operational by May or June. The facility will host two separate daycares with a shared playground that cannot be used at the same time by the two daycares.

"They are two separate spaces that will be licensed separately, and that's KDHE requirement," said Norman. "Each classroom has its own bathroom. There is an adjoining door, but that is for fire safety, not because the daycares will be interacting together."

The Stafford County Child Care Committee is now searching for providers to rent the space, which Norman said could serve up to 20 children, but will more likely serve 16-18.

"We've had a lot of interest," Norman said. "Not everyone who has expressed interest has sent an application, but we have a few to look through. We're asking that people submit a resume and three references to the committee by Dec. 30, and they'll reviewed at the same time."

Progress continues on new daycare facility in Stafford County

Meaningful conversations between women farmers, rural business leaders and landowners have been a goal of the Women Managing the Farm Conference since the event began in 2005, and the 2023 meeting is no exception. The conference will be held February 15-17 in Manhattan. From ag advocacy at large and small scales to the impact of military aggression on global food security to mental health, the 2023 Women Managing the Conference offers women the chance to explore how to grow their operations, their communities and themselves.

This annual conference provides a supportive setting in which women can develop the skills, resources and knowledge needed for success in a competitive agricultural environment. Conference sessions are designed to keep women up to date on the latest advancements in agriculture and thriving within their rural communities.

The 2023 conference will open Thursday morning with keynote speaker Brandi Buzzard, presenting “Small Talk, Meaningful Conversations.” Brandi Buzzard is a cowgirl, rancher, working mom and wife. For more than a decade, she has also been a passionate agriculture advocate while helping others share their agriculture stories.

“There are many factors that lay the groundwork for meaningful conversations – current events, parenting hacks, restaurant choices, etc.,” said Buzzard. “And all of that ‘small talk’ is essentially what leads to deeper, more meaningful conversations. Whether the discussion is focused on food, ranching or societal news, audience members will learn how thinking critically and having authentic conversations makes us all better in the long run.”

Other general session presenters will include Dr. Antonina Broyaka, K-State Department of Ag Economics, who will discuss “War in Ukraine and Global Food Security.” From September 1998 to March 2022, Broyaka carried out scientific and educational activities at the Vinnytsia National Agrarian University, Ukraine. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Broyaka moved to the United States and received refuge in Manhattan, Kansas. She is continuing research activity as an extension associate in the Agricultural Economics Department of Kansas State University on the economic impact of Russian military aggression on Ukrainian agriculture and global food security.

The two-day conference will wrap up with Adrienne DeSutter, an ag mental health specialist who is part of her husband's fourth-generation farm family in Midwest Illinois. DeSutter recognized a need for mental health advocacy in agriculture and began partnering with ag businesses and organizations to promote healthy minds and prevent farmer suicide. In addition to public speaking, she helps create and connect valuable ag mental health resources, writes wellness articles, and has been featured in articles, podcasts and initiatives across the globe.

“With smirks and satire, ‘Sow Hope Grow Hope’ takes you on a playful journey of self-discovery," said DeSutter. Adrienne’s message reminds you that “your growth is greatest when YOU are holding the measuring stick. And when you hit your peaks, so does everyone around you.”

PAWNEE COUNTY–Three people were injured in an accident just after 8p.m. Friday in Pawnee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2007 Chevy Tahoe driven by Marissa S. Doctor, 15, Larned, was westbound on U.S. 56 just west of County Road J.

The SUV crossed the center line and struck a 2009 Ford Escape driven by Erika S. Roman, 24, Great Bend, head-on in the eastbound lane.

EMS transported Doctor to the hospital in Great Bend, Roman to Wesley Medical Center and a passenger in the Ford 18-year-old Brittany&nbsp;Roman Velasquez of Great Bend to Hays Medical Center.&nbsp;

Erika Roman was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.&nbsp;One juvenile passenger was in the SUV and  two in the car; juvenile record is protected data.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring not even a mouse. Hold on just a minute!

The holidays can be a time of extra stress – more money flying out the door, too many places to be in too little time, schedules are upset, food that we don’t eat every day, and just general chaos!

Plan ahead now for some inexpensive fun ways to just be together. Drag out the books – share one that your child loved when they were small and read it together using your best character voices. Make a trip to the library to pick out a new book – every library has great librarians who would love to make reading recommendations for you!

When is the last time you played “crazy eights”, “old maid”, or had an energetic game of Uno? In addition to using skills of taking turns and being cooperative, youth practice counting and paying attention to details.

Have you put a jigsaw puzzle together as a family? Unless you do these often, don’t start with a 1500 piece complicated one. Pick an easy one that everyone can participate in. Set up a card table in a corner and you may be surprised how often someone stops by it to add a couple of pieces.

My family has held a gingerbread house contest for many years. Now before you think these are huge, magical creations, let me tell you that they are made from graham crackers, frosting, and whatever odds and ends of candy and cereal that show up – Halloween candy is often used! The planning and giggles that go into these creations are so much fun to watch and my favorite part is seeing the big kids pair up with the little kids to help them learn about structure, creativity, and often gravity!

Be silly and dance – turn on some music and dance in the living room! It’s good exercise for the body and the brain. Show off those 90’s dance moves and learn a few from your kids. My kids and I still have “carcerts” – Yep, a concert in the car which means singing at the top of our lungs even when we don’t know all the words. We are OK with people thinking we look silly because we are having fun!

Go outside! Take a walk, play kickball, throw a disc or snowball. I grew up on one of the best sledding hills in my town. Even if we only had time for one or two runs, we were throwing ourselves on a sled and racing down the hill. My parents were regular participants in this craziness!

There is an old saying along the lines that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. This applies to your family also – Unplug and Be There!

Just being there can be so hard to do but I remember one of the best/worst weeks quite a few years ago when we had a huge ice storm in 2007. We were out of power for 8 days and, while I could keep our home heated with the gas fireplace and cook on the gas stove, it could have been a really awful week just before Christmas! I couldn’t get to work and we had no internet with no power so we chose to make the best of the situation and had fun. We played games, read books, played outside, and chose to just Be There and enjoy the moment.

During the holiday break, make time to spend time with your kids! Be There because that is what they will remember!

BERAN: Play time

A veteran of the Armed Forces who suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and was at risk for suicide, wasn’t comfortable without immediate access to his firearm. He kept it on his nightstand while sleeping.

With support from professionals, he was able to move the weapon three feet from the bed and later to a dresser that was even farther away. And then to another room. The firearm never left his home.

This is but one example that illustrates the importance of CALM, which stands for Counseling to Assess Lethal Means for suicide, such as medications and guns, said Wendy Lockwood, program development director at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway.

The Center applied for and received a $4,999 state grant that finances CALM training for all employees; expenses include staff time and supplies.

Everyone at The Center has taken the CALM course, which has been integrated into their daily practices.

“Suicide prevention requires a combination of efforts that address the various aspects of this issue,” Lockwood said. “Creating a safe home environment is an important part of this.

“Most prevention efforts focus on WHY people take their lives,” she continued. “But it has become increasingly clear that the HOW is crucial too. The National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the Kansas State Suicide Prevention Plan call for reducing a suicidal person’s access to lethal means. Delaying the interval between suicidal thought and action by just minutes can make the difference in whether the person lives or dies.”

Lockwood emphasized that CALM isn’t designed to take anyone’s guns away. Far from it.

“CALM allows us to address suicide prevention in a way that is sensitive to the culture of central Kansas where gun ownership and outdoor sports are part of our lifestyle,” she commented. “We respect that wholeheartedly. This is about helping people make safe decisions in a time of suicidal crisis; it has nothing to do with gun ownership.

“The goal is to ensure that an impulse doesn’t overwhelm you before reason does. We simply want to assist individuals in developing their own personal plan to limit or delay access to lethal means when their ability to make decisions may be compromised. In time of extreme stress, we need guidance on the best course of action.”

Lockwood noted she is “excited about the opportunities CALM presents. My career passion is behavioral health. But, at the same time, I support the Second Amendment and have a son in the military. I understand personal safety and personal freedoms.”

While firearms are the most common and most lethal choices for suicide, they are only one item on the list.

Others include appropriately prescribed medications that may need to be closely monitored. They could be kept in a lockbox until someone gives the person the proper dosage.

In addition, since knives are readily accessible in many homes, maybe they could be stored in a safe place. “There is a chance for survival if a knife wound is treated quickly,” Lockwood noted. “Statistically, you are more likely to save a life when a knife is involved – not so likely with a gunshot wound.

“Also, there could be other lethal means that we don’t ordinarily think about. For instance, if someone has easy access to heights or lethal fumes related to lifestyle or employment, extra caution is suggested.”

CALM is a free online course that is available to anyone. The training can be accessed via the Zero Suicide website at https://zerosuicide.edc.org/resources/resource-database/counseling-access-lethal-means-calm.

“We encourage anyone who is interested to take the course,” Lockwood said. “Part of our mission is to raise awareness. The more we learn the more lives we can save.”

The Kansas Department of Health &amp; Environment awarded the grant to The Center, which supports the state’s Zero Suicide Program.

Great Bend training addresses access to lethal means of suicide

Barton Community College’s Center for Adult Education will soon begin another nine-week session of classes. However, orientation days are required before starting the classes. Students must attend all orientation days in-person, which will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Jan. 9-12. The Center for Adult Education is located at 1025 Main Street in Great Bend.

The first day of class will start on Jan. 17 and attendance is required to complete the orientation process. Classes will be held from 1-4 or 6-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.

Students will complete the required testing, learn how to navigate their GED.com account and learn about WorkReady! Students will also meet one-on-one with their instructor to discuss goals, expectations, attendance requirements and workload.

Those interested in taking the GED exam without any preparation instruction can do so right away but are urged to receive advising before moving forward.

Minors must bring a parent or legal guardian to enroll. A completed Compulsory Attendance Waiver is required for any student 16 or 17 years of age, prior to starting classes. The form can be furnished by the last school the student attended. If students are unable to obtain a form, they can contact the Adult Education office and a form can be sent out. Barton to host Adult Education classes downtown

A school can never have too much team spirit. In an effort to increase that spirit and overall student participation, Hoisington Middle School Assistant Principal Nick Flowers pitched the return of cheerleading at the school to the USD 431 Board of Education during Monday's meeting. 

"Ultimately, we have a large group of students who have shown an interest in the return of middle school cheer," he told the board. "From what I am sensing, we do have a group of them who do not do fall sports, and a group that doesn't do winter sports, so it would raise participation in the seventh and eighth grades. Because there is an interest, I am absolutely open to the idea of it just because I'm always about getting our students more involved."

The board will revisit the issue at its January meeting, but Monday's proposal included a cap of 20 cheerleaders who may just wear shorts and a t-shirt as a uniform. Flowers outlined a potential tryout process, and said without polling, at least a dozen sixth graders have expressed interest in participating next year.

The board did express some concerns about who would sponsor the sport, or if a cap of 20 cheerleaders is too high. Board President Becky Mooney sponsored the last group of cheerleaders at HMS and said she likes the idea of the sport returning.

"I definitely think it's a good building experience for these girls," she said. "It also prepares them for high school. I got so many comments from the high school. These girls were ready when they went to tryouts there. They knew what to expect. I definitely think it's a good program, and it would definitely be nice to have that back in the middle school. I think we maybe just need to tweak it a little bit."

Flowers agreed to revisit his proposal to address some of the concerns ahead of the January meeting.

Hoisington BOE entertaining idea of returning cheer at middle school

There is no statute of limitations in homicide cases. That's how, on Thursday, 68-year-old Steven L. Hanks was arrested on second-degree murder charges from the death of Mary Robin Walter, stemming back nearly 43 years. Friday morning, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, Barton County Attorney Levi Morris, and various other law enforcement officers held a press conference at the Barton County Courthouse to discuss the case. 

"At 42 years and 10 months, we believe this is the oldest homicide arrest in the state of Kansas," Bellendir said. "It may be one of the oldest homicide arrests in the United States. This also clears the last known homicide in a non-incorporated area under the jurisdiction of the Barton County Sheriff's Office."

Just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 1980, deputies responded to a possible homicide call in the Nelson Trailer Park, lot nine, near what is now Southwest 40th Avenue and Anchorway. 

"Upon arrival, deputies and investigators located the body of a female victim who had been shot multiple times," said Bellendir. "The victim was identified as Mary Robin Walter, who lived at the residence. Walter was 23 years of age at the time, married with one child. She was a nursing student at Barton County Community College."

Bellendir said an extensive investigation was conducted at the time, and Hanks was developed as a person of interest in the case. However, law enforcement lacked the evidence needed to submit the case for prosecution.

In April 2022, Det. Sgt. Adam Hales was recovering from COVID-19 when he re-opened the case. "After taking a fresh look at the case, it became evident that some of the information had been initially overlooked, and some had been added at a later date," Bellendir said. "This was unknown to the original investigators."

Bellendir assigned additional detectives Alex Lomas and Bryan Volkel, as well as Patrol Sgt. Travis Doze to the case. Lt. David Paden supervised the operation as the deputies had time. The officers tracked down numerous individuals who had been involved in the case in the 1980s, reaching as far as the Pacific Northwest.

"In October of this year, new evidence was obtained that allowed the sheriff's office to submit the case to the Barton County Attorney, Mr. Levi Morris, for review," Bellendir said. "After approximately four weeks of review, Mr. Morris obtained an arrest for murder in the second degree, and the arrest of Steven L. Hanks, age 68, of Burden. Hanks was a neighbor to the victim at the time of the homicide."

Hanks was arrested by Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents Thursday evening in Oxford and turned over to the Barton County Sheriff's Office for transportation back to Great Bend. He is currently being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond. 

Morris said Hanks could make his first appearance in front of a district court judge as early as Friday afternoon or sometime Monday. The next step will be a preliminary hearing for the second-degree murder charge.

"The facts that we know, and believe they are, and believe we can prove in court fit that charge rather than any charges higher or lower," Morris said. "That can change either to be higher or lower at the preliminary hearing or at any time close to trial."

Bellendir was pleased to bring a level of closure to the case after 42 years. "Homicides are never closed," he said. "As long as you have a homicide case, it remains open until you get it closed one way or the other. This has case has been open ever since I've been a law enforcement officer. 

"I started with the sheriff's office in 1982. This has been an irritation for the sheriff's office that we've never been able to close this case. A lot of investigators have tried to close this case, and we were unable, at that time, to get the information we needed."

Bellendir thanked the many agencies that assisted in the investigation, including the KBI, Great Bend Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Cowley County Sheriff's Office, Winfield Police, Burden Police Department, and Everett Police Department in Washington state. He also gave high praise to his own detectives.

"The credit in this case goes to my detective division, who were in the trenches doing the nuts and bolts work," he said. "These are long, complicated investigations, and tedious. The credit really goes to my people.

"This is such a complicated case with so many moving pieces," he continued. "The credit goes all the way back to the early 1980s to the first cops that responded to the scene. The KBI has assisted us greatly in the case. Chief Haulmark is fairly new to the community, but he was personally out digging around in boxes trying to find records we needed from the 1980s. This was a joint effort."

Bellendir said Walter does still have family living in Kansas. At the time of her death, Mary was married to Doug Walter, who died in 2021, without closure in the case.   

"On the anniversary of her death, that was the day he would go in the basement," said one of Doug's stepdaughters, who was present at Friday's press conference. "All the lights would be off, and he didn't want anyone to bother him." 

Two stepdaughters moved in with Doug after he remarried, even though some considered him to be a suspect. Many originally thought Hanks committed the crime.

"I feel like a lot of people thought he did it," said the stepdaughter. "It was no big deal. We didn't think anything of it until now that we're older and we look back, and people always say they thought Doug did it. It's nice to have proof that he didn't."

Hanks was arrested on second-degree murder charges from the death of Mary Robin Walter, stemming back nearly 43 years. Friday morning, Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir, Barton County Attorney Levi Morris, and various other law enforcement officers held a press conference at the Barton County Courthouse to discuss the case. "At 42 years and 10 months, we believe this is the oldest homicide arrest in the state of Kansas," Bellendir said. "It may be one of the oldest homicide arrests in the United States. This also clears the last known homicide in a non-incorporated area under the jurisdiction of the Barton County Sheriff's Office."<figure>

 </figure>Just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 1980, deputies responded to a possible homicide call in the Nelson Trailer Park, lot nine, near what is now Southwest 40th Avenue and Anchorway. "Upon arrival, deputies and investigators located the body of a female victim who had been shot multiple times," said Bellendir. "The victim was identified as Mary Robin Walter, who lived at the residence. Walter was 23 years of age at the time, married with one child. She was a nursing student at Barton County Community College."Bellendir said an extensive investigation was conducted at the time, and Hanks was developed as a person of interest in the case. However, law enforcement lacked the evidence needed to submit the case for prosecution.<figure>

 </figure>In April 2022, Det. Sgt. Adam Hales was recovering from COVID-19 when he re-opened the case. "After taking a fresh look at the case, it became evident that some of the information had been initially overlooked, and some had been added at a later date," Bellendir said. "This was unknown to the original investigators."Bellendir assigned additional detectives Alex Lomas and Bryan Volkel, as well as Patrol Sgt. Travis Doze to the case. Lt. David Paden supervised the operation as the deputies had time. The officers tracked down numerous individuals who had been involved in the case in the 1980s, reaching as far as the Pacific Northwest."In October of this year, new evidence was obtained that allowed the sheriff's office to submit the case to the Barton County Attorney, Mr. Levi Morris, for review," Bellendir said. "After approximately four weeks of review, Mr. Morris obtained an arrest for murder in the second degree, and the arrest of Steven L. Hanks, age 68, of Burden. Hanks was a neighbor to the victim at the time of the homicide."Hanks was arrested by Kansas Bureau of Investigation agents Thursday evening in Oxford and turned over to the Barton County Sheriff's Office for transportation back to Great Bend. He is currently being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond. Morris said Hanks could make his first appearance in front of a district court judge as early as Friday afternoon or sometime Monday. The next step will be a preliminary hearing for the second-degree murder charge."The facts that we know, and believe they are, and believe we can prove in court fit that charge rather than any charges higher or lower," Morris said. "That can change either to be higher or lower at the preliminary hearing or at any time close to trial."<figure>

 </figure>Bellendir was pleased to bring a level of closure to the case after 42 years. "Homicides are never closed," he said. "As long as you have a homicide case, it remains open until you get it closed one way or the other. This has case has been open ever since I've been a law enforcement officer. "I started with the sheriff's office in 1982. This has been an irritation for the sheriff's office that we've never been able to close this case. A lot of investigators have tried to close this case, and we were unable, at that time, to get the information we needed."Bellendir thanked the many agencies that assisted in the investigation, including the KBI, Great Bend Police Department, Oxford Police Department, Cowley County Sheriff's Office, Winfield Police, Burden Police Department, and Everett Police Department in Washington state. He also gave high praise to his own detectives."The credit in this case goes to my detective division, who were in the trenches doing the nuts and bolts work," he said. "These are long, complicated investigations, and tedious. The credit really goes to my people."This is such a complicated case with so many moving pieces," he continued. "The credit goes all the way back to the early 1980s to the first cops that responded to the scene. The KBI has assisted us greatly in the case. Chief Haulmark is fairly new to the community, but he was personally out digging around in boxes trying to find records we needed from the 1980s. This was a joint effort."Bellendir said Walter does still have family living in Kansas. At the time of her death, Mary was married to Doug Walter, who died in 2021, without closure in the case. Barton County Sheriff: Hanks arrest for 1980 murder is historical

If battling online retail giants was not difficult enough, local businesses continue to battle workforce shortages and supply chain issues. Great Bend Chamber of Commerce CEO Megan Barfield said that's just more reason why to shop locally this holiday season. The chamber has returned its "Shop Local and Win" campaign to incentivize that behavior. Barfield said the chamber will be giving away nearly $1,000 in chamber certificates on Dec. 21.

"Really, how it's different than some of the other shop local campaigns is we're incentivizing the consumer to do the shopping here," she said. "When they spend at least $20 in a transaction with any of our chamber members, they can take a quick snap and email a copy of their receipt to shoplocal@greatbend.org."

The receipts must be from Great Bend Chamber member businesses, and each transaction must be at least $20 to qualify. All qualifying entries will be entered into the drawing. Brentwood Builders and Nex-Tech Wireless have teamed up to provide nearly $1,000 in prizes.  

"Everyone hears, 'Shop local, shop local,'" Barfield said. "But we have to keep, I feel like, reminding ourselves of that, of why it's important to shop local. It is those local businesses that are the heart and soul of our community. They're supporting all our non-profits, our ball clubs, and extracurricular activities and those groups."

The big giveaway will take place live on the chamber's Facebook page at 10 a.m. on Dec. 21. Barfield said those indecisive shoppers who would like to spend locally can still purchase chamber gift certificates to be used at any chamber business. Those are available at the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce office, 1125 Williams Street.

Great Bend Pilot club initiated two new members while welcoming back a returning member during their first fifth Tuesday afterhours meeting.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend Pilot Club recently added an afterhours meeting designed to provide another opportunity for those interested in joining but not able to attend the monthly first and third Tuesday noon meetings. 

In opening remarks at this inaugural Fifth Tuesday meeting, President Barbara Watson said, “We are all still the same club, same goals and projects, and same leadership.&nbsp;This is just another opportunity for anyone interested in Pilot club volunteerism to join and to be a part of our service organization, especially those that cannot attend our regular noon meetings.”&nbsp;

As Pilots, the organization continues their mission to improve the quality of life in the community through their focus on brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others. The next afterhours meeting is at Perkins Restaurant Jan. 31, 2023 at 5:15 p.m.&nbsp;

Pilot Club of Great Bend welcomes new and returning members

When Kendal Francis arrived to Great Bend in July 2018 to take over as
city administrator, he came at a time when the city was somewhat divided and
still getting over a sour confrontation between a former police chief and city
administrator. Francis has been able to hold the reigns along the city’s path
past the rockiness the past four years, but his time as manager will close
Jan. 6, 2023 with his resignation. 

Francis announced his
decision at Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting, and Mayor Cody Schmidt
acknowledged Francis’ resignation has not been easy on anyone and the city has
quite the process in front of them. "We will do everything in our power to make sure the city continues to move in the right direction," said Schmidt. "In the next 35 days I will be in every meeting possible. We will do what is right for this city to replace Kendal." 
In September, the city council gathered in four separate executive sessions, totaling
95 minutes, to discuss Francis’ contract. While the governing body determined
to give Francis a two-percent raise at that time, there was no extension to his
contract, meaning his contract was set to end Aug. 5, 2023.

Francis was able to find a city administrator role in Hutchinson, thus resigning before his contract ended. "I just want to personally thank you, Kendal, for the time I've had with you," said Schmidt. "We've worked really well together. I wish you nothing but the best in your next journey forward." 
While an update on the search for Francis’ replacement will happen at the
Dec. 19 meeting, the city did approve the hiring of Logan
Burns as assistant city administrator in November. The assistant administrator
position was vacant for several years prior to Burns accepting the job after
serving as the city’s building official the last three-plus years.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Tommie and Tanner are getting a bigger home. Brit Spaugh Zoo staff in Great Bend are nearing completion of a larger exhibit for the two cougars. Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick said the space will more than triple from 512 square feet to nearly 1,800 square feet.

"We added in a concrete barrier to set the new exhibit on," she said. "We've just been doing all the construction in-house on it. We added in some new benches for them, and brought in some rocks for them to play on. One of our cougars likes to pace a little bit, so we're hoping the extra space will help him feel a little more comfortable."

The two cougars are eight and nine years old and can live up to 15-20 years old in captivity. Both have been pacers in the past. The additional space will be especially beneficial to Tanner, who is blind.

"A couple of years ago, we added an upper platform for Tommie, the one that can see normally," Burdick said. "That helped him with his pacing a little bit, but the other one still does a little bit of pacing, especially in the afternoons."

The expansion costs approximately $25,000 but will be used year-round. Unlike their bear counterparts, Burdick said the cougars are outside most days and even enjoy the cold and snow.

Alice Henneman, a retired Extension Educator from Nebraska share the following information a few years ago and it is still relevant today. Let’s look at how the calories in tiny tastes can add up in one day.

· Taste 1 – Eating a cookie that broke while removing it from the baking sheet. I deserve it for getting up early to bake these cookies before heading to work. (Approximate calories = 30)

· Taste 2 - Someone brought holiday candy to work today! “I’ll just have one small piece of the peanut brittle. (Approximate calories = 80)

· Taste 3 – Need to stop at the grocery store over the noon hour. Great – they are offering cheese and cracker samples. That will tide me over until I can swing through a fast-food place. (Approximate calories = 40)

· Taste 4 – The fast-food place is giving out ¼ cup samples of its special flavored holiday coffee. (Approximate calories = 20)

· Taste 5 – Chocolate covered cherries in the break room! It’s still a few hours before the dinner party tonight. Chocolate’s good for you – right? And I’m just eating one! (Approximate calories = 60)

That will tide me over until I can swing through a fast-food place. (Approximate calories = 40)· Taste 4 – The fast-food place is giving out ¼ cup samples of its special flavored holiday coffee. (Approximate calories = 20)· Taste 5 – Chocolate covered cherries in the break room! It’s still a few hours before the dinner party tonight. Chocolate’s good for you – right? And I’m just eating one! (Approximate calories = 60)· Taste 6 – The party is great – but maybe I shouldn’t stand near the snack table. I’m dipping my third chip. (Approximate calories = 75)· Taste 7 – Who can pass up old-fashioned style eggnog? I’ll have just a half cup. (Approximate calories = 200)· Taste 8 – There are just a couple of tablespoons of candied sweet potatoes left. Someone should enjoy them so they don’t go to waste – it might as well be me! (Approximate calories = 60)· Taste 9 – Helping dish up dessert lets me take a little “preview” taste. One heaping tablespoon of candy cane ice cream coming right up! (Approximate calories = 70)If you add the nine taste bites you will have consumed an extra 635 calories for the day. If such “tiny tastes” are continued through the holidays, you might gain a pound a week. Consuming an additional 3,500 calories above your body’s needs and expenditures can lead to gaining that pound a week.Maybe those “tiny tastes” aren’t so tiny after all!
