Equity Bank has announced the hire of Shawn C. Powelson as Regional President of its Central Kansas Region.

Since April 2023, Mr. Powelson has been overseeing all operations at the five Equity Bank branches in his territory, which includes two locations in Great Bend, and one in each Larned, St. John and Macksville.

“We are excited for Shawn to lead our Central Kansas Region and continue to serve the Great Bend footprint and surrounding areas that he has been serving for years,” said Brad Daniel, Regional CEO of Equity Bank. “The talent and experience Equity Bank continues to add will help us continue to provide great service to our customers and team members.”

Mr. Powelson has spent the last four years working in banking in the region. He comes to Equity Bank from Landmark National Bank in Great Bend, where he served for two years as Assistant Vice President of Commercial Lending, beginning in 2020. Mr. Powelson also worked as an Account Executive for Insurance Planning, Inc. in 2019, and was Chief Opportunity Scout for the First National Bank of Syracuse prior to that.

From 2009 to 2011, he was an Assistant Vice President and Loan Officer for Western State Bank in Scott City, Kansas.

Going to Larned Correctional Facility was a great experience for me and for those at the facility. We had the opportunity to bring a gifted Grandmaster chess player, Timur Gareyev, an Uzbeki-American chess grandmaster. He was born in Tashkent to Tatar parents. Gareyev was a part of the University of Texas at Brownsville's chess team from August 2005 to August 2006 and from August 2009 to December 2011 where he helped the university obtain its first national championship. He holds the Guinness world record of playing 48 games blindfolded, winning 80 percent of those games. With 35 wins, seven draws and six losses. All of his opponents were of decent strength (ranging up to 2200).

We at The Gift of Chess were happy to share this phenomenal person/talent with these men over Memorial Day weekend. We wanted them to know that you may be gone from family and friends but not forgotten, that they may be out of sight locked away in prison but never out of mind.

The event was a huge success as he played the first simul at the south unit with nearly 16 players. The men enjoyed the time and were encouraged by Grandmaster Timur to continue playing. Even taking time to inspire and uplift the men with personal encouragement on improving their chess game. The south unit had four winners with the first place going to Phillip Caldwell.

Grandmaster Timur said this guy had a “real good hold on the game.” Many of the men had met at one time or another during my incarceration. They were very pleasant and respectful. We were even happier to have the previous candidate for the House of Representatives, Marck Cobb, who also led the Anatoly Karpov School of Chess for several years.

The buzz surrounding the event was super electric! Grandmaster Timur put on a show at the south unit and the central unit with a few games of blindfolded chess. It was so amazing that the guards afterward wanted to get pictures and autographs from him. The men at the facility were blown away, as I was, with the talent of Timur with him being able to play games blindfolded. At one point he even told a guy, “Hey, you can’t go there. You’ll be in check!” Everyone burst out laughing!

The first-place winner at the central unit was Earl Harris, a spirited chess player! I knew this guy from doing time over 20 years in KDOC. He was happy to see me. All of the guys were super happy to congratulate me for putting this event together for them and for coming back into the prison to spread The Gift of Chess.

Many of these men knew my past. Especially Earl Harris who once was my “Road Dog." He confided in me that he has spent nearly 30 years in prison. And that he could have been home already if not for the horrible choices he made during his time incarcerated. He was charged with more criminal cases for trafficking drugs on different occasions to support his drug addiction.

He said chess helped him to start making better choices. Being a great chess player and making dumb decisions was idiotic. He knew that he could think, and so he does a lot of his thinking and makes choices in life now as if he was playing a game of chess. He also said he is sober and has not been on drugs for over 2 years now!

“Dreamer," who is also known as Vince Vigil, spoke about how he has removed himself from gang life. And that he has now become the younger gang members' mentor. He instructs them how to think, play chess and make moves in life that speak to their character. He said he tells these “youngsters” if you have no character, you have nothing. Every choice has a consequence. I am proud of Dreamer who once had strong influence and affiliations with a Latino gang.

I was super impressed by how kind and cordial Timur was! He and I played all 36 men in the simul together. He allowed me to play half of the men and the other half he played. He quickly beat the first half of the men and while I had been fortunate to win several games, Timur came alongside me and cleaned the rest of them up in astonishing fashion before the time ran out on us to pack up and leave. The coolest experience!

I was lucky enough to have Timur give me some advice and teaching with the Slav defense. One of Black's safest and strongest defenses against the Queen's Gambit. The way we both clicked and really enjoyed one another’s company was awesome! I am happy to announce that The Gift of Chess and Timur look to do more events nationwide as we hope to expand into other prisons nationally.

Before we closed with the awarding of the certificates with Timur, I spoke to these men and let them know how proud I was of them for being great hosts, including Shane and Mrs. Hopkins, activity directors at Larned Correctional Facility.

I let them know how powerful chess is for rehabilitation and change. That we are promoting the idea of using your thinking skills to get out of tough situations and to find opportunities to grow through being thoughtful and creative, two skills that chess provides.

Speaking to these men nearly had me in tears because of all the love they gave me for changing my life and then coming back to give back. I let them know that we at The Gift of Chess have a death grip on this mission to get chess programming in prisons nationwide. Starting here in KDOC first, I let them know that once I get on, I promise to come back and put everybody on as well!

Kiley Stevenson has competed and won in Barton County’s Youth Entrepreneurship Challenge the last three years, and this summer she is interning at Great Bend Economic Development (GBED).

GBED welcomes Kiley Stevenson as their intern for the summer before she heads off to college.

Kiley has been an intern at GBED since mid-May, and she has been exposed to many different projects. She joined Lee Ann June, Communications Director, with promotion on the radio. Friday mornings you can hear updates from GBED with Shannon and Becca on 100.7 Eagle Country.

From Kiley... As a young citizen and business owner of Barton County, I am excited to spend my summer working for Great Bend Economic Development, where I will use the summer to learn more about what it takes to build and grow a community before heading off to college. I will be attending Fort Hays State University in the fall where I will get my degree in business management with a focus in entrepreneurship. My hope is to continue to grow my current business while teaching others how capable our youth is. I am extremely passionate about getting our youth involved and teaching them how they can make a difference in our community.&nbsp;

In 2023, Governor Laura Kelly issued a near record number of vetoes (though close to half were overturned). What were her motivations in making use of her veto power so extensively?

Some of Kelly’s vetoes reflect her very practical, service-oriented vision for Kansas. More than anything else, Kelly campaigned as the anti-Brownback, as someone who would be responsible regarding state priorities, and not allow the state’s finances to be subject to such things as radical flat tax proposals or efforts to limit the revenue-raising power of cities. The bills pushing these and other changes often included provisions that Kelly wanted, but giving them up in order to stop what she considered larger harms was more important.

Kelly also wants Kansas to take a live-and-let-live attitude towards trans issues, which led her to repeatedly veto bills that targeted the access which trans Kansans had to public bathrooms, athletic competitions, and more. That vision is not shared by the Republicans majority in Topeka—and this session, after years of trying, the legislature finally managed to get its way.

Which leads to Kelly’s less visionary, more partisan uses of her veto pen. The veto power has long been used to not just shape legislation, but also send messages, to warn or punish legislators—particularly those of the chief executive’s own party—by targeting specific issues.

In this case, Kelly’s target was to use her line-item veto to eliminate $250,000 designated to help turn the Quindaro Ruins, a former stop on the Underground Railroad in Kansas City, into a historic landmark. Rep. Marvin Robinson, a Democrat, had pushed for this money, which the Republican leadership inserted into the final budget bill—but only after Robinson broke ranks and provided crucial votes to overturn Kelly’s vetoes of the legislature’s restrictive trans bills. While Kelly’s veto message claims that Robinson’s budget item hadn’t been properly vetted in committee, it’s not unreasonable to see payback here.

Some vetoes, though, are neither obviously visionary nor partisan. Kelly’s veto of a provision that would have made up for financial losses which some Kansas students suffered due to changes in the distribution of scholarship money through the state’s Comprehensive Grant is an example.

For decades, the Kansas Comprehensive Grant was distributed to Kansas’s colleges and universities, public and private, in a manner that recognized the distinct sets of students with financial need who might choose a small private (sometimes faith-based) college over a large public (and secular) university. By converting the distribution of the Grant to a rigorous per-student formula, Kansas’s independent colleges lost some of their ability to provide scholarship support to needy students, since those institutions are smaller, with a collectively smaller student body than state universities (though often with a higher percentage of qualifying-students nonetheless).

The legislature aimed to help make up for that loss with an additional $5 million of Grant money. Kelly’s reasoning for vetoing that single budget line is ambiguous. Was it rooted in a belief that Kansas shouldn’t provide full support to students who choose colleges that may have a faith-orientation? Was it a move reflecting that most (though not all) independent colleges are in rural, more Republican areas, while most (though not all) public universities are in counties that voted for Kelly? Both? Neither?

In the complicated process of striking deals and shaping legislation, the role of vetoes is one of the least predictable. This year, Kelly’s broad use of that power received both applause and condemnation, from the usual partisan sources. But maybe some of her vetoes make sense to her alone.

INSIGHT KANSAS: Kelly’s vetoes - visionary, vindictive or otherwise

Barton Community College&nbsp;and world-renown equipment manufacturer Case New Holland Industrial (CNH) have teamed up to offer the Top Tech program starting this fall for students interested in working for Case or New Holland dealerships as an equipment technician.

Barton’s CNH Instructor, Mark Bogner, has been training CNH dealer technicians for the better part of a decade, but only Case IH and New Holland dealership employees are eligible to attend classes. While the current program will remain the same for dealers, the Top Tech program will be open for anyone interested in the mechanical field, and he is excited to open the floodgates to help usher in a new generation of technicians.

“This equipment is some of the most impressive machinery on the market,” he said. “We cover all mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems as well as engine and powertrain components and electronic service tool applications in our current classes. The Top Tech Program is the doorway to a lifelong career working for a company with a great reputation in the world of agriculture. Every day is a chance to solve problems and grow as a technician.”

Barton’s Executive Director of Workforce Training Mary Foley said this program offers students the ability to be employed by a CNH dealer after just two semesters of training and can hit the ground ready to earn a living.

“This program is intended for students who prefer to work with their hands instead of in an office setting, but of course, there is always the opportunity to move on from the technician life at some point and work for CNH in another capacity,” she said. “It will instruct on the basic knowledge and skills of repair of agricultural equipment and provide the skills they need to be successful.”

Foley said the career is perfect for someone who loves to actively problem solve every day.

“This career allows technicians to work outside and work autonomously without someone always staring over their shoulder,” she said. “They get to see the latest and greatest pieces of equipment that are outfitted with cutting-edge technology, and they really can work at their own pace most of the time,” she said.

Foley said according to the Kansas Occupational Outlook, the need for farm equipment mechanics will increase by almost nine percent over the next ten years, and the median salary is $37,270. She urges those interested to apply quickly as the course is only open for enrollment in August, and there are only 16 spots open.

“Keep in mind that is the median, and that is for all farm equipment mechanics across all dealers and manufacturers,” she said. “With CNH being a premiere equipment dealer, the salaries can often be higher. This is a great opportunity, and we are excited to get classes filled.”

While the current program will remain the same for dealers, the Top Tech program will be open for anyone interested in the mechanical field, and he is excited to open the floodgates to help usher in a new generation of technicians.“This equipment is some of the most impressive machinery on the market,” he said. “We cover all mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems as well as engine and powertrain components and electronic service tool applications in our current classes. The Top Tech Program is the doorway to a lifelong career working for a company with a great reputation in the world of agriculture. Every day is a chance to solve problems and grow as a technician.”Barton’s Executive Director of Workforce Training Mary Foley said this program offers students the ability to be employed by a CNH dealer after just two semesters of training and can hit the ground ready to earn a living.“This program is intended for students who prefer to work with their hands instead of in an office setting, but of course, there is always the opportunity to move on from the technician life at some point and work for CNH in another capacity,” she said. “It will instruct on the basic knowledge and skills of repair of agricultural equipment and provide the skills they need to be successful.”Foley said the career is perfect for someone who loves to actively problem solve every day.“This career allows technicians to work outside and work autonomously without someone always staring over their shoulder,” she said. “They get to see the latest and greatest pieces of equipment that are outfitted with cutting-edge technology, and they really can work at their own pace most of the time,” she said.Foley said according to the Kansas Occupational Outlook, the need for farm equipment mechanics will increase by almost nine percent over the next ten years, and the median salary is $37,270. She urges those interested to apply quickly as the course is only open for enrollment in August, and there are only 16 spots open.“Keep in mind that is the median, and that is for all farm equipment mechanics across all dealers and manufacturers,” she said. “With CNH being a premiere equipment dealer, the salaries can often be higher. Just after 9 p.m. Friday, the City of Russell Fire Department was paged to a structure fire at 1706 N. Main Street, according to a media release. Shortly after the first units arrived on the scene, a police officer reported an explosion and a firefighter injured.

Russell County EMS transported Fire Chief Dylan Riedel to Russell Regional Hospital. 

EagleMed then transported him to a burn unit at Via Christi in Wichita. Fire crews contained the fire to the garage. The Kansas State Fire Marshall was contacted to assist in the investigation. The origin of the fire is still under investigation.

Public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae

Margaret Selfridge was “surprised and humbled” when she recently was recognized with the DAISY Award, which honors extraordinary nurses locally, nationally and internationally.

Selfridge, RN, who has 20 years of nursing experience, has cared for patients at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH) for 12 of those years. Currently, she sees patients in the Acute Care and Skilled Care Nursing departments.

“I enjoy seeing patients and families and want to do something worthwhile for my community,” Selfridge said. “In addition, I enjoy collaborating with this great team of nurses. I trust in our leadership and my fellow nurses who play vital roles in making our team successful.”

Selfridge also noted that while the nursing profession demands certain skills and knowledge, “compassion is the extra, powerful gift we can give a patient. When we show compassion, it might lead to someone else passing it on to others in their own way.”

Lynne Gevara, another RN at PVCH, said Selfridge is well known for her compassion. “She is a caring nurse who gives excellent, thoughtful care to each patient. Margaret is focused on patients and consistently takes extra care to address their needs.”

The hospital’s Patient Family Advisory Council sponsors the DAISY Award, which recognizes nurses with a certificate and other items.

The council reviews nominations once a year and selects a winner in time for Nurse’s Week, which was May 8-12 this year.

“We are working to revitalize our DAISY Award Program,” Gevara noted. “The goal is to provide our nurses with more visibility during the year so that our community knows about this opportunity to express their appreciation.”

An ordinance on whether or not chickens will be allowed
within city limits of Great Bend will go before the Great Bend City Council on
Monday, June 5. 

At the last meeting in May, the council heard from residents pleading
their case to allow chickens in town with the current ordinance not abundantly
clear. There were six community members that spoke at the last meeting stating
the benefits of owning chickens. 
 "Great Bend is not a top-tier economy. Some people are having a really hard time, especially with just putting food on the table. I'm thinking about common sense. If people want to augment their food stores with some chickens, why should we say no? It doesn't sound like it's common sense."

The city’s legal team has no recommendation on whether to allow chickens, but
did create a proposed clarifying ordinance to continue the ban if that is the
direction the council wants to go. City Attorney Allen Glendenning also stated
if the council chooses to permit the harboring of chickens, he encourages
guidance on regulating the chicken ownership with possible permits, limits,
prohibiting roosters and proper enclosures. 
 
At the May meeting, a citizen informed the council that a police officer
stopped by her house on Broadway Avenue and told her she needed to get rid of
her backyard chickens. 
 
"If we're enforcing this on Broadway, are we going to send the police door-to-door south of 10th Street and east of Main Street and remove everyone's chickens? Are we going to cause this large mess of the great chicken roundup? It just seems like this decision to ban chickens everywhere is going to cause much more problems than just allowing people to have four hens in their backyard." 
 
Prior to 2001, chickens were allowed within city limits with proper
documentation. The city sanitarian at the time requested an ordinance banning
chickens, partly because of health concerns. The Animal Control office in Great
Bend, through the Golden Belt Humane Society, wrote a letter stating their
office is against legalizing chickens within city limits. 
 
The agenda item will be discussed at the Monday meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m.
at City Hall.

The city’s legal team has no recommendation on whether to allow chickens, but
did create a proposed clarifying ordinance to continue the ban if that is the
direction the council wants to go. City Attorney Allen Glendenning also stated
if the council chooses to permit the harboring of chickens, he encourages
guidance on regulating the chicken ownership with possible permits, limits,
prohibiting roosters and proper enclosures. 
 
At the May meeting, a citizen informed the council that a police officer
stopped by her house on Broadway Avenue and told her she needed to get rid of
her backyard chickens. 
 
"If we're enforcing this on Broadway, are we going to send the police door-to-door south of 10th Street and east of Main Street and remove everyone's chickens? Are we going to cause this large mess of the great chicken roundup? It just seems like this decision to ban chickens everywhere is going to cause much more problems than just allowing people to have four hens in their backyard." 
 
Prior to 2001, chickens were allowed within city limits with proper
documentation. The city sanitarian at the time requested an ordinance banning
chickens, partly because of health concerns. The Animal Control office in Great
Bend, through the Golden Belt Humane Society, wrote a letter stating their
office is against legalizing chickens within city limits. 
 
The agenda item will be discussed at the Monday meeting beginning at 6:30 p.m.
at City Hall.

Kathleen Norman announced in January she would be leaving her role as executive director with Stafford County Economic Development. Ryan Russell has been named as her replacement. Russell, now 40, has lived in Stafford County and abroad, and is ready to put a life of experiences to use as the new director.

"It kind of fits what I've done in the past," he said. "It's a little different; I've never been in charge of building houses, which I'll be doing that. I'm sure it will be okay. I'll be learning a lot here in the next few months."

Russell was born in Lyons, spent some time in Pawnee Rock, and lived in St. John for approximately eight years between second grade and his sophomore year of high school. His family moved to Kentucky where he graduated from high school before attending a small Bible college in Tennessee. Russell then spent five years working for a non-profit in Florida, and he recently spent 12 years working in southeast Asia before returning to Hudson last October. His work as a missionary in Asia transitioned into economic development.

"When I moved there, I figured out pretty quickly there were not a lot of jobs for young people, and the education system there wasn't very good," he said. "I created a program to help youth transition from a bad education system to creating their own jobs."

He helped youth apply for loans to start their own businesses, then started a similar program for adults. He founded and operated Opportunities Now which still functions today. He transitioned into working with larger businesses, teaching owners about the importance of investment and how to secure funding.

Upon moving back to Stafford County in October, Russell worked as a substitute teacher when the Eco Devo job opened.

"A lot of the work Stafford County Eco Devo does is around economic development and being a bit entrepreneurial," he said. "I'm kind of familiar with trying to figure out funding because I did a lot of that where I was in southeast Asia; putting together funding, starting programs, and starting businesses."

He hits the ground running. On June 2, Eco Devo submitted a grant to build nine more homes in Stafford County. He's also catching up on the Stafford County Port Authority grain terminal project. 

"Right now I'm just getting my feet wet a little bit," he said, "getting to know people, trying to understand the business climate here, who's involved."

Down the road, Russell would like to expand Stafford Eco Devo's small-loan program with the help of Network Kansas, connecting those loans to education opportunities about marketing and financial management. He also wants to expand youth programming in the county, and help existing businesses utilize e-commerce while maintaining local storefronts.

Russell plans to fully take on his executive director duties at the end of July.

Home bakers from coast to coast put their best breads on the line as they submitted more than 200 recipes in one of four categories: Say Cheese!, Go Nuts, Wholesome &amp; Healthy&nbsp;and Quick &amp; Easy. Piantek was named the 2023 “Best of Breads” champion during the virtual NFOB event on June 1, 2023. The online celebration of the eighth NFOB shared stories about Piantek and her fellow finalists and their winning recipes. In addition to her overall crown, Piantek also won the People’s Choice award, based on online votes from across the country.&nbsp;The virtual event also announced Michele Kusma of Columbus, Ohio, as the winner of the random drawing for a Kitchen Aid Mixer.&nbsp;

In the spirit of sharing and breaking bread together, Piantek encouraged others to venture out of their kitchen’s comfort zone and try out something new — like her NFOB-winning Cheese Lover's Barbecue Bread Twists.&nbsp;

Venture Corporation will begin working on K-96 Highway and the street improvement projects on or about June 5. These projects will be worked on simultaneously. 

The project will encompass K-96, from 10th&nbsp;street to the city limits. K-96 will be reduced to one lane. McKinley Street, 10th&nbsp;to 8th&nbsp;with the closure of 8th&nbsp;at McKinley on the east and west sides. Residents will still be able to access their homes on 8th, as well as continue to access the businesses on McKinley. There will also be repairs done to Almond, Buckeye, Cedar, Dogwood, Evergreen and Firethorn. 

Each part of this project will differ in the amount of time for completion, but the city expects the project as a whole to take upwards of two months depending on weather and unforeseen circumstances. Please be attentive and aware as crews work to make repairs in these areas.

K-96 & street improvements to begin in Great Bend

Barton County staff will see many changes over the coming six weeks as part of the $4.2 million HVAC and renovation project at the courthouse. While most offices are expected to change locations from June 15 through July 15, the Barton County Attorney's Office is already calling 1520 Main Street its new home. Wednesday morning, County Administrator Matt Patzner discussed some concerns with county commissioners regarding the cost of the move.

"Granted there was a lot in there, but it was a lot of hours for one office," Patzner said. "If we spread that out all over the courthouse, there would definitely have to be some sort of flat rate."

The county was billed more than $7,500 for 21 hours of work to move the county attorney's office, almost double the anticipated cost. The commission discussed negotiating a flat rate over an hourly rate for future moves to keep a handle on costs, but Commissioner Tricia Schlessiger said, given the scope of the project, it may be difficult for movers to estimate how many hours the move will take. She proposed using area high school teams or county staff for future moves. County Counselor Patrick Hoffman said that opened the door for liability issues.

"I just would really want whoever is moving us to have good liability insurance and make sure their employees are theirs and don't become our problem," he said.

The commission may look into other moving options, including using a corporate moving firm. Barton County District Court will soon occupy the building located at 1709 Main Street in Great Bend, and other county offices will occupy the first floor at 1500 Kansas Ave.

Many initiatives exist within a school district to educate and get
students thinking. One of the initiatives USD 428 in Great Bend has tried to
provide is career paths. 

With the high school and middle school providing
courses in specific careers, Lindsay Mazouch said the grade schools are trying
to show the many career options to the children when they get older. Mazouch is
a technology coach and in charge of the library at Lincoln Elementary School.
Mazouch writes grants to obtain additional career readiness books that might
interest the students. "We have a budget every year to order specific books," said Mazouch. "We have some we have to have for the State of Kansas. We don't have a lot of extra money to order books that the kids might be interested in. I always try to write a grant to make sure they get books they want to read." 
The USD 428 Education Foundation awarded more than $23,000 in mini-grants to
teachers and school buildings in 2023, and Mazouch received a grant for E-Sports
and coding books. The books are designed to entice children to learn more about
coding and how it works in the real world and video games. "We showcase the new books and tell the students about them," said Mazouch. "They have to get on a waiting list to read them. It's pretty cool to see them sparked through a book. A lot of times they're on a screen so we really try to reach them in a different way." 
Last year, Mazouch received a grant for Dash &amp; Dot robots where students
learn introductory robotics skills and coding through an application that tells the robots what to do.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
