Starting with a local 4-H club and the sidelines at Great Bend High School, Molly Kaiser has worked her way through the photography business, first at Kansas State University, then as an intern with the Minnesota Twins, and now as a full-time professional at the University of Florida. But sometimes it's the smaller things that matter most. Kaiser recently won the first-ever Special Olympics Kansas Myron Cramer Photo of the Year Award.

"The roots run deep with Special Olympics in my family," she said. "Being able to give back and use my career as something that can showcase the joy and everything Special Olympics stands for. It gives people an opportunity to be themselves and showcase what God-given talent they have."

In February, Kaiser returned home to take photos at the West Region Basketball and Cheerleading Tournament in Great Bend. Many of her shots have been used by Special Olympics Kansas throughout the year, but a picture titled "Joy of Basketball" featuring three players full of smiles, notched her the award.

Kaiser's involvement with Special Olympics began with a civic oration assignment in elementary school. She selected Rosemary Kennedy as her subject and learned about Kennedy's trials and tribulations. In 1962, Eunice Kennedy Shriver started a summer day camp in her back yard for those with intellectual disabilities. That camp eventually turned into the Special Olympics. Kaiser's grandfather was an entertainer for the organization, and her cousin, Brent, recently became the coordinator for Special Olympics Kansas.

Kaiser's love of sports photography also began at a young age. She was an award-winning photographer for the TLC Twisters 4-H Club, and still recalls her first sports photo tens of thousands of shutter clicks later.

"My first sports photo I took was on my iPod Touch at a middle school track meet," she said. "It just never stopped from there, my love for sports and just getting those moments a lot of people miss captured. That's unbeatable to me. Going from an iPod Touch to helping run a department at a very successful D-I school is unbelievable to me."

Kaiser graduated from GBHS in 2019, then studied journalism and mass communications at Kansas State University. She not only took photos for various Wildcat teams, but that position landed her a summer internship with the Minnesota Twins in 2022. Upon graduating from Kansas State, she accepted the assistant director of photography position at the University of Florida. She's now traveled all over the Southeastern Conference (SEC), including stops at LSU's "Death Valley," the University of South Carolina, the University of Missouri, and the University of Utah.

The SEC is a noted sports conference known for its pre-game atmospheres. Kaiser has yet to visit some of the biggest schools in the country, but she's enjoyed the pageantry of football in the south, including the Gator Walk in Gainesville.

"It was very different going from Kansas State to Gainesville," Kaiser said. "K-State has the parking lots all around the stadium. In Gainesville, the stadium is surrounded by the campus. I walk to work those days because I'm super close to my office. Everywhere on campus is just filled with tailgaters. I think that was really cool to see the first time."

But it's not all fun and games. Kaiser typically works a 9-5 workweek with additional duties on top.

"During that 9-5, it's a lot of scheduling and helping our student interns with anything they need help with," she said. "A lot of them come in with little to no experience, so it's getting them to a level where they can apply for jobs and be confident with the product they're putting out."

Kaiser also took photos at the Major League Soccer All-Star Game in St. Paul, Minn., in 2022, and has also used her talents at concerts. While in Kansas, Kaiser also worked with the Kansas City Monarch baseball team and the Kansas City Current in the women's professional soccer league.

Great Bend's Kaiser wins Special Olympics Kansas photo honor

As 2023 comes to a close Kansans are celebrating the end of another year and looking forward to a new beginning in 2024.

Come January 8th, the state legislature will assemble to embark on its new agenda for the year.

Already, numerous bills and resolutions have been pre-filed for the upcoming session, providing us with a preliminary but incomplete insight into the legislative agenda.

In the House, the chamber will hear pre-filed bills on changing the start of the K-12 school year, amending the definition of “healthcare provider”, allowing direct vehicle sales from manufacturers (such as Tesla), and a proposition to amend Article 9 of the Kansas Constitution concerning counties’ home rule, just to name a few. A full list can be found on the state legislature’s website.

In the Senate, the pre-filed bills were all filed by Senator Holland and focus mostly on fiscal intricacies such as reconfiguring or discontinuing various tax credits. Though one of the bills would prohibit state legislators from accepting any state employment and the lieutenant governor from employment as the head of a state agency.

However, there are many other issues we should expect the legislature to address this session. As always, there will be a big push for Medicaid expansion and marijuana legalization. There inevitably will be some “culture war” bills to restrict access to abortion care and further marginalize gender and sexual minorities. And of course, we can expect lots of disagreement on education funding — both K-12 and higher ed.

Examining the pre-filed bills and the inescapable discussions of these high-profile issues, I find myself compelled to contemplate the fundamental question of the government's role — what it currently is and what it ought to be.

In 1966, political scientist David Elazar wrote his seminal work American Federalism: A View From the States, which focused on state political culture in the United States.

According to Elazar’s framework, Kansas has a moralistic political culture. This means that Kansans view government as a means to better society and promote the general welfare.

States with a moralistic political culture generally advocate for an expanded government role. Such states are inclined to endorse the idea that the government should actively contribute to the public good by allocating resources towards programs aimed at assisting the less fortunate. Moreover, these states perceive it as a responsibility of public officials to champion the

development of new initiatives benefiting marginalized individuals or addressing public policy challenges, even in the absence of significant public demand for such actions.

Even as national polarization has changed the attitudes of Kansas’ Republican majority over the past decade, putting this tradition under tension, the state's moralistic political culture persists. Underscoring the widespread belief that government serves as a vehicle for societal improvement and the advancement of the common welfare.

As legislators embark on the upcoming session, they carry the responsibility of upholding the state’s moralistic tradition. Whether grappling with issues of healthcare, education funding, or constitutional amendments, the overarching theme should be a commitment to the betterment of society, including initiatives that contribute positively to the public good.

But as the year draws to a close and we stand on the cusp of a new chapter, citizens, just as much as legislators, are responsible for steering Kansas toward a future that reflects the collective vision of a state committed to the well-being of all its citizens.

The Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce will up its social media presence in 2024 with the addition of Lesli O'Neill as the new social media and communications coordinator effective Jan. 1. O'Neill will be in charge of handling the chamber's various electronic means of reaching the public.

"Things that get posted on Facebook for the chamber, or the chamber's Instagram page," she said. "We're also going to be updating the website, just refreshing it a little bit and making it a little bit more current."

Part of the website upgrade will include a new community calendar. O'Neill hails from western Kansas but moved to Ellinwood in 2012 to teach. She taught video production at Ellinwood High School and transitioned to yearbook, photography, English, and a handful of other classes. She now takes that experience to social media to highlight community events and local businesses.

"That's a lot of how businesses promote themselves anymore," she said. "I think it's almost easier to get information out through a Facebook or Instagram post. People can see it when they want to. It's just easier to reach people."

O'Neill met her husband, Sean, who is also a teacher at EHS in 2013. He continues to teach in the district. Lesli retired from teaching to stay home and take care of the couple's 18-month-old daughter.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

Doug Hubbard made a career out of being a first responder. He spent nearly a decade as an EMS director and assistant fire chief. He spent time as a 911 director at Barton County Communications. But since 2001, Hubbard has served as the fire chief in Claflin. That role comes to an end on Jan. 1 as he steps into retirement. Hubbard said the job has always been about the people around him.

"We have a lot of good people on the fire department," he said. "It all starts with training. I don't have to make those decisions right there on the spot. We're trained and we have protocols we go by so it works pretty smoothly now days."

In August, Hubbard went before the Barton County Commission to discuss the purchase of self-contained air packs for Fire District No. 1. Before announcing his retirement at Thursday's meeting, Hubbard announced the department had received a $16,000 grant from the Kansas State Fire Marshall's Office. With that grant, and $20,000 already budgeted for the purchase, he expects that purchase to come before the commission in 2024.

Kyle Smith, who has worked on the Claflin Fire Department since 1986, will take over as chief. Hubbard said it may be difficult to stay out of the fire department, and he will likely remain involved with transport services.

Hubbard retiring as Claflin Fire Chief; Smith assumes new role

The family trees were long ago planted. Sometimes the branches are just difficult to see. Staff at the Great Bend Public Library wants to help those interested in genealogy uncover their pasts. Beginning Jan. 4, 2024, the library will host Genealogy Thursdays once a week from 11 a.m. to noon. Adult Services Assistant Nicole Garrett said the service will be similar to the library's Tech Tuesdays where staff offers assistance related to technology.

"You can come in if you're running into a roadblock where you're having difficulties finding information, and maybe you just need help because you're not aware of a genealogy service that's available," she said. "We'd be able to offer guidance and help them get past these roadblocks and find the family history they're looking for."

The library has access to various genealogy resources, including city directories, Kansas history books, and previous genealogy work that has been donated by other patrons. Staff can also get patrons acquainted with services offered by the state library.

"They have several resources we can use for no cost," Garrett said. "You just have to have a Kansas driver's license to access them, and there are several you don't even need that. They're free for all Kansans to use. There are various resources online that a lot of people just don't know about. We can help direct them to those resources to help them find more information about their family tree."

The Great Bend Public Library is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The library is closed on Sunday, and will be closed Dec. 30 through Jan. 1 for the New Year holiday.

Great Bend Library offering new genealogy assistance in 2024

Driving around town in January, expect to spot the Christmas tree mulch site. Some old trees tossed willy-nilly inside bright orange snow-fence still sport shiny tinsel, forlorn remains of holiday décor. The tugs at my heartstrings shouldn’t surprise me since discarded Christmas trees never fail to trigger brief sorrow.

I had to ask why this sight causes such a reaction. Part of it involves acknowledging another year has passed. Flipping a calendar page doesn’t affect me nearly as strongly as that stack of evergreens waiting to pass through a mulcher. Seeing wood chips instead of trees forces me to accept the date I write on checks.

The greatest reason this discard pile tilts my emotional Richter scale has to do with Christmas associations. Early memories center on Christmas trees. Bright bulbs, sparkling tinsel, and my mother’s collection of old ornaments fascinated me. As a tot, I treasured holding sparkling birds and delicate bulbs in my tiny palm before Mom gently hung them from a branch. Even then, I understood these recorded family stories.

Mom decorated modest evergreens that fit in various tiny living rooms over the years, but trips to Grandma’s meant blue lights and bulbs on a big aluminum tree. Other seasons, a rotating light wheel hypnotized me with its rainbow of ever-changing color reflecting off a snow-white tree. Grandma enjoyed variety.

As an adult with my own daughters, I preferred modest evergreens similar to those my parents selected. For years, the girls and I tramped Pinney Pines’ fields following Thanksgiving. We searched exhaustively for a tree containing a bird nest because lore said that brought good luck in the new year.

Often, we slogged over swampy ground until mud-covered blobs coated our shoes before we found the treasure we sought. After Mr. Pinney cut it, we carried our treasure home only to discover lop-sided branches or a crooked trunk. Who cared because it had a bird nest? My husband, whose job it was to fit the tree in the stand, did. More than once, he wished we’d find more balanced showcases for beloved ornaments.

After he secured the tree in its stand, wrapping it in lights and hanging ornaments captured the girls’ and my attention. As years pass, I treasure this moment more intensely. Opening our ornament box reminds me of raising the lid on a sacred chest of memory. Wrinkles, weight, and gray hair fall away until I am a new bride decorating a tiny tree with homemade ornaments and one store bought trinket I pinched pennies to buy. Baubles depicting babies, pets, new trucks, ballerinas, mules, horses, Santa fishing, and new homes commemorate lifetime landmarks. Sitting in the dark with only Christmas lights shining creates the perfect setting to give thanks for each ornament and its associated memories.

A sage once said, “One can’t experience joy if one doesn’t know sadness.” This statement describes our Christmas tree perfectly. If putting away ornaments and taking the tree down didn’t sadden me, I wouldn’t feel near the joy putting it up and hanging memories that celebrate a lifetime of joys.

 </figure>Driving around town in January, expect to spot the Christmas tree mulch site. Some old trees tossed willy-nilly inside bright orange snow-fence still sport shiny tinsel, forlorn remains of holiday décor. The tugs at my heartstrings shouldn’t surprise me since discarded Christmas trees never fail to trigger brief sorrow.I had to ask why this sight causes such a reaction. Part of it involves acknowledging another year has passed. Flipping a calendar page doesn’t affect me nearly as strongly as that stack of evergreens waiting to pass through a mulcher. Seeing wood chips instead of trees forces me to accept the date I write on checks.<figure>

 </figure>The greatest reason this discard pile tilts my emotional Richter scale has to do with Christmas associations. Early memories center on Christmas trees. Bright bulbs, sparkling tinsel, and my mother’s collection of old ornaments fascinated me. As a tot, I treasured holding sparkling birds and delicate bulbs in my tiny palm before Mom gently hung them from a branch. Even then, I understood these recorded family stories.Mom decorated modest evergreens that fit in various tiny living rooms over the years, but trips to Grandma’s meant blue lights and bulbs on a big aluminum tree. Other seasons, a rotating light wheel hypnotized me with its rainbow of ever-changing color reflecting off a snow-white tree. Grandma enjoyed variety.As an adult with my own daughters, I preferred modest evergreens similar to those my parents selected. For years, the girls and I tramped Pinney Pines’ fields following Thanksgiving. We searched exhaustively for a tree containing a bird nest because lore said that brought good luck in the new year.<figure>

 </figure>Often, we slogged over swampy ground until mud-covered blobs coated our shoes before we found the treasure we sought. After Mr. Pinney cut it, we carried our treasure home only to discover lop-sided branches or a crooked trunk. Who cared because it had a bird nest? My husband, whose job it was to fit the tree in the stand, did. More than once, he wished we’d find more balanced showcases for beloved ornaments.After he secured the tree in its stand, wrapping it in lights and hanging ornaments captured the girls’ and my attention. As years pass, I treasure this moment more intensely. Opening our ornament box reminds me of raising the lid on a sacred chest of memory. Wrinkles, weight, and gray hair fall away until I am a new bride decorating a tiny tree with homemade ornaments and one store bought trinket I pinched pennies to buy. Baubles depicting babies, pets, new trucks, ballerinas, mules, horses, Santa fishing, and new homes commemorate lifetime landmarks. Calendar of events for 2024 Great Bend activities

In 1920, the Electric Theater in Larned, Kansas featured a film starring the famous Tom Mix called "The Feud." This film showed Tom Mix as the character Jere Lynch who was supposed to be the head of a caravan that proceeded along the Santa Fe Trail.

Tom Mix was the star of many early Western silent films from 1909-1935. Mix was one of the early pop icons of the cinema and was featured in many films that were shown at the Electric Theater. &nbsp;&nbsp;Many early actors had once been outlaws, lawmen, cowboys, or pugilists which helped shape their characters.&nbsp; Although they were often men with their faults, they were idolized by adoring fans who only saw them for the characters they portrayed.&nbsp;An art form that existed over a century ago, silent movies lasted from 1903 to about 1927. Out of the nearly 11,000 major silent features, 900 of those were westerns. The cinema played a key role in society, and going to the movies was prized by anyone who could afford a movie ticket.

One of the first movies to develop the storytelling of a longer feature was the "Great Train Robbery." In 1904, John Schnack and R.R. Smith, owners of the Edison Exhibition Company, showed the movie at the Larned Opera House. This was the first full-length feature to be shown in this part of Kansas, although these two gentlemen had been touring the middle and eastern states showing shorter films since 1902. In 1910, Schnack established the Electric Theater. The company would last for over 40 years, and in 1948, Schnack was recognized as a "Pioneer of the Motion Picture Industry."

Opening next week at the Santa Fe Trail Center Museum is an exhibit "Cowboys of the Silver Screen - the First 50 Years" featuring the private collection of John Birdeno. Birdeno has collected Western movie memorabilia for nearly half a century and has known both the actors and relatives of many of the actors. The exhibit features photographs and objects of over 60 of the early Western actors both famous and obscure.&nbsp;&nbsp;

On April 5, 2021 the Great Bend City Council approved a loan to the SRCA to assist with the costs of building retaining walls and installing new timing systems at the dragstrip.

The terms call for annual payments due on Dec. 31. Since the dragstrip is not operating, the SRCA's ability to generate the funds to make the 2023 payment have been impaired. The SRCA is asking that the council agree to defer this payment during the pendency of the legal actions concerning the dragstrip.

A motion will be presented to the city council on Tuesday, Jan. 2 to defer the SRCA's loan payments during the legal actions related to the lawsuit.

The city council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at City Hall.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (12/28)

Many employees select the end of the year as a natural stopping point. Barton County Emergency Risk Manager Amy Miller is doing just that after 37 years of service to the county. During Thursday's final commission meeting of the year, the board also spoke to Sean Kelly, the county's new emergency manager director. He's ready to hit the ground running on the four components of risk management: planning, mitigation, response, and recovery. 

"We do a lot more expansive stuff behind the scenes preparing," he said. "That's the plan, is to prepare for and mitigate disasters as best we can to help get our communities through."

Kelly graduated from Olathe Northwest High School and attended Fort Hays State University where he competed on the rodeo team. He also received a degree in emergency management and homeland security from Barton Community College. Kelly has worked in the engineering field for 13 years, with six years at the Kansas Department of Transportation. He was hired as the Barton County engineer technician in August 2017. He's been the assistant emergency risk manager for three years and is now ready to tackle the many hazards that may impact the county, including tornadoes, floods, fires, or winter storms.

"We do hazard assessments to try and gauge what our most likely impacts are going to be, then try to plan around them," he said. "With the National Incident Management System (NIMS), it encompasses an all-hazard approach to your planning and mitigation efforts so you try to plan broadly for this situation or that situation."

Kelly also sits on the state's Incident Support Team as a planning section chief and a situation unit leader. He's made several contacts with the Kansas Division of Emergency Management, other local partners, and officials from other counties. As the new emergency management director, Kelly will also retain the title of engineering technician with the county.

Miller was unable to attend Thursday's commission meeting, but the board and County Administrator Matt Patzner thanked her for nearly four decades of service. She was the second-longest-serving county employee.

"Few employees today have reached 37 years of service," Patzner read from a letter of appreciation that was signed by the commission. "Fewer employees reach 37 years while dealing with natural and man-made disasters, as well as insurance, workers' compensation, and other such matters. Having worked in various departments in the county and with a background in journalism, you were a natural selection for a job that few understand."

BARTON COUNTY—Two people were injured in an accident just before 1p.m. Thursday in Barton County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2004 Nissan Altima driven by Terrick Sidney&nbsp;Wilkins, 19, Greeley, Colorado, was fleeing from law enforcement&nbsp;U.S. 281 twelve miles North of U.S. 56.

The driver&nbsp;failed to navigate a curve. The car traveled&nbsp; off the roadway to the right, struck a culvert and rolled.

EMS transported&nbsp;Wilkins to Wesley Medical Center and a passenger&nbsp; Reanna Renee&nbsp;Llamas, 20, Greeley, Colorado, to the hospital in Hoisington. They were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

This year, the organization aims to deliver joy to 400 seniors through this project.

A suspended driver's license, higher insurance rates, and spending New Year's Day in jail, not to mention the risk to other drivers. The consequences of driving impaired are no way to begin 2024. Eagle Radio, along with several community partners and the Great Bend Police Department, wants to eliminate those risks with the New Year's Eve Taxi. Any money raised is going to go to Shop with a Cop for next year. This year, between the Fraternal Order of Police and the money we raised last year, we were able to shop and provide Christmas presents for 38 kids in our community."

The new commercial kitchen inside the Stafford County Annex building is set to open in January. First, there are some educational items scheduled at the facility. On Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, from 4-6 p.m., K-State Research and Extension 21 Central District and Stafford County Economic Development will host Land of Kansas' Sammy Gleason. Eco Devo Director Ryan Russell will also present as part of the kitchen opening ceremony.

"The kitchen is now licensed as a commercial kitchen," Russell said. "We're planning to go for some grant money in January to put some things in the kitchen. But the event itself, basically I'm going to talk about what we want to do in promoting value-added food product development in the county."

Several small businesses in Stafford County already make value-added food products they can sell themselves. Making those items in a commercially licensed kitchen could open the door for sales in stores, online, or out-of-state. The new kitchen in Stafford County will be one of less than two dozen such facilities around the state.

Land of Kansas promotes products made in the state. Gleason will talk about her organization's services and requirements regarding labeling and packaging products. On Feb. 21, Central District will host a Breadmaking Workshop for artisan and sourdough breads. A food preservation program is also in the works.

The Stafford County Commercial Kitchen will be available for licensed food producers to rent following the Jan. 18 kickoff.

Stafford County opening commercial kitchen in 2024

Citizens concerned about utility rates is common. The concern is no
different in Hoisington. The difference in Hoisington is that the city
purchases wholesale electric power from Western Electric and then distributes
the power to their residents. 

With concerns on the electric rates, the
Hoisington City Council approved a rate study. Based on that study, Hoisington
will rebase the electric rate, or change customers’ power cost adjustment
(PCA). 

Hoisington City Manager Jonathan Mitchell said the change will save customers
approximately $1 million over the next five years.


"That's real money," said Mitchell. "That's certainly something we think our residents will notice. That should be on the bill sent out at the end of January and hit your mailbox in early February. We're excited about that."

The electric bill consists of three parts…a meter charge, the base rate for
usage and the PCA. Anytime the city has to pay more or less for power than
budgeted for, the extra expense or the savings is passed on to the customer in
the PCA. 

Mitchell said two staff members operate the Municipal Power Plant in
Hoisington and both worked to install a new engine at the plant. 


"Our two staff members have done a lot of that work on their own," said Mitchell. "The benefit of that is it saves us money, but it also helps them when we have maintenance issues come up, they know how to fix it. Because of their work, the City of Hoisington is able to get that new engine installed for a third of the cost."

The City of Hoisington generates electricity to approximately 1,600 customers.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Adjustment will save Hoisington customers on electric bill

On Dec. 27, just after 7 p.m., Barton County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported injury accident at the intersection of K-156 and Northeast 130 Avenue, the Claflin turnoff on K-156 Highway.&nbsp;

Investigation at the scene indicates a 2004 Toyota Prius driven by 32-year-old Matthew Burg of Claflin was southbound on Northeast 130 Avenue when it failed to stop at the stop sign crossing K156. A 2018 Ford F150 driven by 55-year-old Laura Trinkle of Manhattan was eastbound on K-156 and was unable to stop prior to colliding with the Prius. Upon impact, both vehicles traveled northeast before coming to rest in a field.

Burg, as well as two juvenile occupants of the Prius, ages one and three, were transported to the University of Kansas Medical Center - Great Bend Campus. Burg and the one-year-old were later transferred to a Wichita-area hospital with serious injuries.

Trinkle, as well as two passengers, ages 82 and 59, were transported to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Claflin Fire and EMS services as well as Ellinwood EMS service.

The end of the year is supposed to be a slowdown and peaceful navigation through the holiday season. Barton County officials were left scrambling to find insurance coverage. In late November, current insurance provider EMC told county officials it would no longer provide coverage in 2024. County Administrator Matt Patzner presented to the commission Thursday in the final meeting of the year.

"This resulted in a search for a provider," he said. "On Dec. 12, 2023, the commission interviewed personnel from Copeland Insurance and World Insurance Associates. It's suggested the commission select Copeland Insurance. Copeland will provide administrative control over at least six separate insurance companies."

Lucas Barta with Copeland also presented to the commission. Insurance coverage will be similar to coverage before. Commission Chair Shawn Hutchinson said the county made the most of its options. The commission approved the bid of $589,289.34.

"We had 30 days to find new insurance for the entire county," he said. "They told us that we were no longer going to be covered so, out on the hunt. We had a proposal from the original agent that was a million dollars a year in premiums. So, Lucas, good job. Matt, good job coming up with this plan. I don't feel like patting ourselves on the back too much because it's still considerably more than we were paying last year. However, it's considerably better than being without insurance, and it's considerably better than a million dollars."

County Counselor Patrick Hoffman further explained the EMC previously covered multiple government entities similar in size to Barton County. Due to an increase in claims throughout the Midwest, and increased costs associated with property repair and replacement, EMC was no longer offering coverage to those entities.

A roughly $115,000 memorial was approved by the Great Bend City Council
last week to be placed at Veterans Memorial Park. The memorial is designed for
any Vietnam veteran to instantly recognize the memorial is for them. The memorial
is symbolic of “The Wall That Heals” and will contain the Vietnam Service
Medal.

B&amp;B Metal Arts, based out of Hoisington, is constructing the
project. B&amp;B has done outdoor memorials around town, including the “Play
Ball” memorial at the Great Bend Sports Complex and the “Breaking The Sod”
memorial at the intersection of 10th Street and Highway 56. Artist Bruce
Bitter is ready to get to work on the 50' memorial.


"There are two wings, each 25 feet long," said Bitter. "It's two and a half feet at the bottom and it goes up to five feet. With a concrete base of 18 inches, it'll be about six and a half feet to the top of this. The helicopter will be another two or three feet above that."

Along with the memorial, there will be a concrete foundation, ADA sidewalk,
park benches and flood lights. Above the wall will be a 3D, 12' stainless-steel Huey UH-1 helicopter. The helicopter bottom will be eight feet
in the air, with the whole memorial overlooking Veterans Lake.

"When the sun comes up in the east, it may go up over the houses and hit this memorial around 10 o'clock when you have all your gatherings," said Bitter. "It'll have some shine to it."

There will be 12 elephant plants constructed of stainless-steel, with each
plant having approximately 10 leaves.

"We did put the elephant grass in to shield the memorial from anyone walking on top of this," said Bitter.

Left and right of the wall ends will be the ground troops in combat style, protecting the wall and helicopter. The 5' sculptures depict ground troops hiding in elephant grass.

Interpretive plaque and stands are also included in the project to tell the story of the memorial and include veterans names. The 15" x 24" plaque will also be stainless-steel.

The memorial is expected to dedicated on
Veterans Day, next November.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;
