The Great Bend City Council voted in July to spend $1 million dollars to help building owners in downtown Great Bend renovate the upper floors of their buildings. The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act to help the city recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The loft project provides a 50% grant for the cost of renovations, including the addition of fire sprinklers and fire alarm systems.

Great Bend Economic Development Director Sarah Hayden said a planner and an architect with the group Upstairs Downtown are coming to Great Bend on Nov. 8 and Nov. 9.

“They’ll talk about everything from the feasibility of lofts to financial opportunities...give you loft designs,” Hayden commented. “This would be for anybody who wants to be involved in this project. If you already own a loft, if you are an investor that wants to get involved, bankers, city officials, anybody that wants to be involved in this project somehow would benefit from this workshop.”
