The growing season is underway in Central Kansas. Some of that fresh produce will make its way to the Great Bend Summer Stroll Farmers' Market, a joint effort by the Barton County Health Department and city of Great Bend. Health Department Educator Katelyn Sigler said the first farmers' market will by Thursday, May 23 on the courthouse lawn.

"The farmers' market can range from any kind of fruits and vegetables, to crafts, anything homemade," she said. "It is every Thursday from 4-7 p.m. until the middle of October. Sometimes we end it a little bit earlier than that depending on the produce and what's available."

Also returning is the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program, which was created to give low-income seniors more opportunities to buy fresh produce.

"Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program coupons is for 60 years and older," Sigler said. "It is income-based. You can come to the health department and get signed up starting June 1."

Seniors who qualify for the program will receive 10 $5 certificates to be used throughout the farmers' market season.
